Surge brakes questions

The trailer for our boat has surge brakes. Seems to work fine when braking. However, after coming to a complete stop, and upon accellerating, there is a momentary click/jerk prior to the trailing moving again. I presume it the brake actuator being release upon acceleration. I have tried accelerating very slowly to reduce the effect.

The first question is whether this is normal operation? And if so, how bad is this for the tranny (would something like this from overton's help: Tie Down Ball Breaker™ Shock Absorbing Hitch (http://overtons.com/modperl/overtons...um=25107&fcat=)? If it isn't normal, can you advise what I can do to remedy?

Sounds normal to me. I don't think it's really all that bad for the transmission, upon take off idle/slowly accelerate until you feel the surge release then you're clear to drop the hammer and be on your way.

I wouldn't waste the $$ on that thing, drastically reduces your turning angle and probably doesn't help the jerking either.

This has been discussed before here. I think it is normal, but there are things you can do to reduce the clunk. Check out the other thread.

Thanks for the lead, Jeff. I searched for "click" and "jerk" but didn't think of "clunk"....
