    refinishing swim platform

Just got done refinishing my platform, went to a clinic at a local boat dealer that had a how to seminar featureing a local company's products. They told me to use a stripper/cleaner to remove the teak oil build up (I used to sand the platform every spring) Then use their brightener and teak works to finish it off. My problem now is it has a orange hew to it instead of a golden brown. I will have to wait till spring to strip it off and just go back to using teak oil again. It may not happen to your platform but it did on mine. Didn't want to give the company's name out for fear of slander???????? All is not what it seems.

    RE: refinishing swim platform

You must have made a mistake somewhere.....lol....
Anyways, I use Epifanes varnish for teak. It was originally sold to me by Tom Koroknay who owns the Lyman factory molds and used that to finish the teak on the many boats he refinished. It works great. Just apply a one or two coats of a base coat and then one or two coats of a matte finish. I love the way the platform looks. It's very low maintenance. The primary draw-back is that it's a little slippery.

Only mistake made was not using teak oil. don't like to use varnish as teak wood needs to breath. also can't have slippery surface. I fall off the platform enough. ...lol...

I was told the same thing about teak "needing to breath". I even asked Tom when twice before I purchased the varnish from him. I figured he knows since worked with teak for a living, he should know what he's talking about. As for the slipperiness, we're used to it and don't fall off......

Here's a picture of the transom of my boat. You can see some of the swim platform.

The factory and service centers use linseed oil, the garden variety local home improvement type. Using teak oil is like trying to get caffeine out of coke.

NEVER varnish teak!.....no matter what any salesman pushes on you. The best way to re-hab teak is with steel wool and linseed oil.

Hope you didn't waste too much money and good luck getting that varnish off....I'd suggest getting it off sooner than later.

                  All,

Attached is a write-up on cleaning and maintaining teak from BOAT U.S. on Teak cleaning and maitenance. Should explain all. This is how I have allways maintained my Teak (which my father has used and uses on his sail boat for years). Careing for teak is a love relationship with oil. Cause when its done right...MAN IT LOOKS GOOD.

On steel wool....DONT. It gets in the grain and rusts. Brass wool, scotchbrite, or stainless steel wool.

                  Hope this helps.

Mr. Becker is correct... if you are careless and leave behind steel wool it will rust, but stainless wool is spendy and if you just pay attention to detail you won't leave any behind.

I have used this product several times on my girlfriend's 02 Ski Nautique's swim step.

                      http://www.allguardproducts.com.

It works well, however, a ski that slides across the wood will create a scruff mark in the finish. Touchups are easy. I can send photos. Never sand teak as the heat will make a paste like substance that prevents teak from breathing.

It's amazing how everyone has their own opinion. The person that sold me the teak varnish wasn't a salesman, but someone that refinished teak on Lyman boats for a living. I've had a varnished platform for over 15 years without a single problem. I suggest you use what works best for you.

According to Beckers article (which is really good), looks like Linseed is a type of teak oil while Tongue is the other.
