    351 rebuild

Can somebody please tell me which type of rebuild kit I should be using to rebuild the 351 in our 93 sport? It has run the bearings and requires a crank grind but the pistons are sweet so only needs a re-ring kit. I've been looking at some kits from Summit Racing but don't know which one would suit this engine as some of them say they are for truck application. Does anybody know what the difference is? At the moment i'm looking at P/N FEM-2056116M-011. Any help would be much appreciated.

    RE: 351 rebuild

    Hi,

I am also looking for equals on the 351W. Which interior engine marine parts are interchangeble with the automotive parts?
Have you put the question to Summit? Cranks are nice priced if you ask me.
Oil pump, timing chain set, should be considered when you open the engine.
    Please keep me informed.

Yes i've sent summit a email asking them but havn't got a reply yet. We will be doing timing chain as well as a new cam and full set of lifters. Forgot to mention that it is a ProBoss so has te gt40 heads on it.

GZA you may have a problem with standard rings as they could be a thinner than normal set of piston rings in that vintage of motor. I can't find my notes on that at the moment but you may want to call PCM with you model number and serial number and ask if they cancheck it out for you because if you use the wrong piston rings the piston may not be able to be installed or they may have a loose ring land fit. Also make sure the head gaskets have stainless steel fire rings in the gaskets as they will rot out quickly if they are not. If the engine is being rebuilt why reuse the pistons because they maybe worn and could cause piston slap later down the road when a set of pistons are fairly cheap to replace them. Also make sure the crankshaft is also of good quality don't use a soft crank in this engine as it will wear out quickly.

Forgot to ask, why has it run the bearings? No oil? Low oil pressure? Is the crank realy gone? Or only the bearings, the should go first.
My idea, when the pistons, rings, and bore are not damaged and were not out of lube, leave it all in as it is or replace it all. New rings should run in on an honed bore which is geometrical perfect. An old bore isnt.
Possibly send pictures on my private PM, if you like

How old is the motor? Might have build up some sludge cutting off circulation to your bearings or a weak oil pump. Could have been also been low on oil and deceleration caused the oil to travel forward causing the oil pump to be exposed to air instead of oil. I would suggest buying a new oil pump. You might want to look at getting a gear drive instead of a new timing chain. Gear drive will help eliminate the stretch factor and hold timing better.

The motor is around 1500 + hours. The oil pressure is sweet, so don't have any reason to suspect the pump. The bores will be fine with a hone. Cam is also stuffed, one lobe completely tucker from a non-working lifter. We've only owned the boat since March last year but have already put 200 plus hours on it, so who knows how the last owner treated her.

I would consider cam bearings while the motor is apart for better oil pressure .As faras engine parts go a gt 40 is nothing but a ford lightning motor. parts are interchangeable as far as the crank goes make sure yo get one for a one piece rear main seal 87 and up is one piece 87 and older is two piece. the cranks are balanced different and require different harmonic balancers

                  GZA,

You might want to venture over to www.themalibucrew.com, there is a guy "GalaxyToad" that really knows his stuff.
