steering replacement/upgrade

We need to replace the steering cable in our 88 '2001'. After some research I'm wondering how difficult it would be to swap out the entire system with rack and pinion or even just replace it with a new rotary. It all looks simple enough, but I've been mistaken before. Looking for advice/experience/comments.....I haven't found much info on such swaps/mods. Couple people claim success and like the upgrade, but no other info really. It just seems stupid to spend $300 on a cable when an entire system is $150, other than a little extra work. Is there something I'm missing?

Try correctcraftfan.com. Guys over there do a lot of work on the older models.
