    Brake Cylinder Question.

I just replaced the brake cylinders in my 15 year old trailer. The 1st 15 years were in fresh water. The backing plates, springs and shoes were in great shape. It is now a saltwater boat. How long can I expect to get out of my brakes now? I also installed a brake flush kit. I did not want to spend the 300 for the Tie Down disk conversion but if will keep me from brake maintenance every year I will.

    RE: Brake Cylinder Question.

Discs are the way to go but can get expensive especially when you have to consider switching out the master cylinder to one with a higher output pressure that is required by most discs. Some cheaper alternatives that will increase the life of your brakes are:
*Flush kit - Which you already did.
*Replace the entire backing plate and hardware with a galvanized unit.
*Flush out the entire hydraulic system and replace the fluid with a silicone based fliud. Silicone is non-corrosive and does not absorb water like alcohol based fluids do. It also increases the life expectancy of all the rubber seals. I did this over 6 years ago and haven't had a leak since.
*Spray everything (except the shoes and drums) with Boeing Boeshield T.9

Thanks JAG... I did spray everything with Corrosion Block. I will see how long I get out of my 15 year old set up!
