    Teak Platform - Fixing ?

I have a 2000 Teak swim platform that has (when standing on it looking forward) a piece of teak (front right) that is splitting. It is a piece that is actually two pieces put together to form one. What do i do to resecure this piece. Does it get screwed together or glued ? I know i will need to refinish one fixed. Ideas ?

        Teak Platform fix

I am in the wood manufacturing business for about 40 years now. What you have in your platform, is a piece of dimension lumber. We do this all the time to minimize our waste. What has happenned is that the joint failed. There are many things that cause joint failure, but here is the best fix that I know of. First, if possible, remove the entire strip of wood. Because the joint already has glue on it, I would use a good water proof epoxy. Force the epoxy down into the joint from both sides, and clamp until the glue dries. Do not remove the clamps until you complete the next step. To prevent this from happening again, turn the board on edge, drill 1 or 2 pilot holes, and insert 1 or 2 flathead stainless screws. Should the joint fail again, The screws will hold. Once the screws are secure, you can now remove the clamps. Sand the piece of wood and your good to go. The nice thing about this procedure, is that you will never see the screws once you re-install the board onto the main deck.
