I can tell you that a new pro boss gt40 is about $6900.00 plus shipping and installation which rounds out to $9800.00. I just had a new one put in my 2001 SAN. My warranty was up last year so this is all out of pocket to me.

So your saying things will break when there new and not when its older and more hrs? How about when you or people in general get older, less things break I guess. You have to look at what things cost compared to what you spend to protect yourself. $1200 is not a lot for trans or other things, especially electrical or computer issues and the cost to diagnois. Howm many people are going to invest that $1200? very very few
I am saying in my experiences with equipment, if there is a defect from the factory it will show up fairly quick and that is usually the major stuff. Investing in my opinion is called planning for the future and if that is not your thing than more power to you, it is called saving for a rainy day!! There may be problems that pop up, but from my four good experiences with these engines I would take my chances.

Hundo- I can tell you it was not from lack of maintenance. I did not buy a 50k dollar boat to run it into the ground.

G-man- It was from a sunk valve that ended up breaking off and metal pieces got ran through the cylinder and scarred it up pretty bad, I could have just rebuilt the old one but for a few extra dollars I could get the new one put in and get the warranty back on the engine.

There is no chip gooch, some people give advice not knowing everyones situation. There will always be one problem with these forums and people assuming what that other person is saying between the lines. What does bother me is when people say that there will only be problems within the first 3 yrs, thats crazy. Now I could look at some peoples posts and say they have a chip on their shoulder about warranties? There are pros and cons to everything but to tell someone flat out NO and give no opinion is wrong. People need to look at what they spend yearly on car insu /health etc then compare $1200 for 3 yrs to cover the possibility of having to replace or repair an engine tranny electrical? I could be wrong but many people here have the ability to pay cash or did for their boats or assume that everyone has the money to pay for a $10k motor . Just my .2 cents  Happy boating

                      Scott,

I would say with my experience with HWC, that even if it was an aftermarket warranty, they will treat you right. On the other hand, I bet that within a few months you will know if it is needed or not (lot of repairs, none or very few like I suspect).

On another note, how was the purchase experience with the new ownership? Cliff is a great guy, but so was John.

                      Which boat did you get?

If you look at what I am saying, I didn't say that you won't have problems after three years, I plainly stated that if there is going to be a major defect from the factory, it will usually show up fairly quick, that isn't what I said between the lines but plainly stated. I deal with large and small equipment all the time so I do know what takes place with engines after time! As you stated hundo, I was only giving him my advice from what I see and am not telling him yes or no. You are the one that has seemed to jump to conclusions here!

I think most of us agree that these engines take more stress then the ones in our trucks and just because most the people who have replied to this post have had no problems does'nt mean nothing will happen ever. I have owned 4 chevy trucks all with a 350(two with the new "327") and no problems, that does'nt mean one wont break. And 01Superair had one fail and it cost $10k , so even if it was'nt a factory warranty your chances of getting paid are pretty good and a cost of $1200 is well worth it. Now if you spend the money and you have no problems you say "dam" I should'nt have bought it. I don't look back the last 25 yrs of car insurance and say dam if I did'nt pay for I could have invested all that $$ and been retired now

Now if I ruffled anyones feathers I apoligize . At least on this forum we can agree to disagree with out being called nasty names

                              Don et al,

This has definitely been an active thread and I appreciate everyone's opinions.

I did buy my '05 216 from Cliff at HWC and he was absolutely top notch. I feel confident that they will also do right and actually he did not push the extended warranty, just said here it is and you have 12 months to decide.

I never realized that an engine could cost $10k installed and so truth be told, I could not afford to be in that situation. If nothing else, you all have educated me on what the risk is and clearly $1,200 insurance vs. $10k of pain is an easy trade-off. I'll let you know what I do at the end of this year :-).

Lastly - Don - I am looking for some good places to ride in Houston and would appreciate your guidance if you know the area. If you are in Houston, then I'd like to perhaps set some time over the summer to hang out. Others of course are welcome!

                              Take Care,

                              Scott
