When you say steering is smooth, can you rotate it freely with your little finger? I went through the same thing. A good cable allows one finger drivng even under power. A bad one creates all kind of weird feelings including feeling hard to turn one direction. Fought it mentally for a whole season then replaced it. Totally worth the amount of work.

yea, when the boat is on the trailer I can steer super easy, pretty much with one finger. But, when the boats is under way I almost need two hands on the right hand turns. Left turns are pretty smooth.

sounds like a steering cable issue. While you're replacing that, drop the rudder and grease that bad boy too

My 2001 SAN turns a little hard to the right but not bad, is that the cable or is that because of the way the prop spins the water?

In that particular year you will always find a little more resistance turning to the right than the left. As you mentioned, due to the prop wash. However if it becomes a two handed muscling to get the wheel going it's time for a cable and a greasing of the rudder.

I had this same problem with my 2003 SAN. I ended up replacing the rudder mount. Bought one from nautique parts which came with the grease fitting. I cleaned the rudder shaft and applied new grease. Boat turns great now.
