2004 Super Air 210 Timing - Need Help

Think I have a timing issue.. Feels under powered and shudders a bit. Not sure what happened but here's how I was told to do the timing with the distributor:

Turn crank to TDC cylinder 1
Put the metal point of the distributor where the cylinder 1 metal pin is on the cap
Insert the whole distributor into the motor while keeping the aligned distributor and cap.

    Does this sound right?

I have the GT40 engine but what your doing sounds right.... If by sputtering you mean its not running on all cylinders then I would start by checking to make sure the plug wires are connected to the right cylinder and corresponding distributor terminal. Owners manual or service manual for the 330 should provide this info if you need it.

I was off a notch. Put it back to TDC and did it again and it fired right up. I don't have a timing light though so I think I'm going to take it in to get tuned.

You can't really set the timing on the excal. The distributor housing rotation affects cam retard, which can only be read by the dealer's diacom interface. Timing is completely adjusted by the computer.

Think it's worth going in and having it professionally done? Doesn't cam retard affect timing?

There are a lot of posts about this. Yes, it absolutely affects the timing of the engine. Do a search on here for "cam retard" on here. You might get lucky winging it but settings are pretty specific.

Sorry but I maybe misunderstanding you here.....but cam retard is the timing of camshaft rotation to crank rotation (valve timing)......nothing to do with ignition advance or retard which is controlled by the ECM on mordern motors like the Excal. The base timing is set by the distributor housing moving number one terminal under the rotor inside dizzy.

The biggest trick is getting Number 1 piston on compression stroke while having the rotor under the correct terminal to fire number 1 spark plug... you are probably 180 degrees out.

See Post #3 Timing is controlled by ECM, but cam retard is affected by rotating distributor

My mistake. Im going to take it in to have a dealer hook it up to diacom and set the cam retard. Spoke to pcm today and it's supposed to be between 45 and 48 degrees. I don't have the tools though so I'm going to take it in. Thanks for all the help
