    Glove box gas shock

Has anyone heard of a fix for the glove box gas shock on a 05 ski?
The gas shock that is in there is way too small for the weight of the cover. When you go to close the cover it slams so hard that it could break a finger.
I asked a CC rep and he said that CC was coming out with a fix, but no one I know has heard anything yet.

Don't plan on a fix anytime soon. I contact CC back in 1997 when I purchased my boat and got the same answer: "A fix is coming soon". 9 years later and still no fix, even after repeated inquiries to CC. Do a search on this site -- there are many other posting on this subject.

Does the glove box use a gas spring? If so, they come in lots of sizes and forces. http://www.spdhardware.com/gs1.htm

My 00 glove box gas shock is also broken. The lid is super heavy duty and weighs a couple pounds at least. The lid could be used on a vault. This is a very common problem. I'd love to find a replacement for the shock. Based on my service records, it was replaced before and the part cost 26.00.

The link I posted has a cross reference page to NAPA part numbers...wonder if you could swing past your neighborhood NAPA and pick up a replacement?

I've got small little scars on the back of my hands....courtesy of my ’99 Sport. I was under the impression that it was designed that way to prevent intruders from removing their arm as they tried to pilfer my glove box???

Mine wore out to the point it wouldn't hold the lid up. Bought a replacement from my dealer and it works like new. Can't remember the cost, but it wasn't bad.

But...even when it was new, it slammed home with force when it got past the break point...a design flaw that needs to be fixed. I've heard that some people buy those springs that you fold over when you close the lid added to the lip of the lid.

Personally I would like to find a shock that applies constant up pressure...without re-positioning the shock. But I'm guessing the break-point doesnt' allow that.

If anybody figures it out, let me know....I'm afraid of my little one losing a finger.

On a side note...I wonder why they did they not design the lid to seal and keep out water on the 99's.

I had to replace the shock on my '95, same problem. I got a new shock from the Nautique dealer, about $30. Also had to get 2 new shocks for the motor box, another $60. Wish there was a place to get them cheaper.

I had the gas shock go on the glove box on my '02 196. I took the shock to Napa and they ordered one for me (I am sure any autoparts store either has them in stock or can order them but be sure to take the original in for length and psi reference). Cost around $15 (I think) and I had a choice of different psi but I chose to replace with same psi as original.

Thanks for the input. Sorry to hear about the hand, OUCH
Don't you think by now CC would put a bigger shock in or 2 of them?

Just went to NAPA for my 2000 Ski 196 glove box shock The 20lb is 819-5620 and the 40lb is 819-5582. The 20lb is the original I went with the 40 and the door open faster. Either one is 21.95 plus tax. My Napa had both in stock

These lifts didn't even make a year, for an expensive machine, this is beyond piss poor design. I was considering sending the lid out to be lighted at the machine shop or routing the center of the bottom out on the router table to lighten the lid. Let us know how it works out.

I think it is because the shock spend most of their time compressed. I think I will leave my glovebox open when in the garage and see if that prolongs the life.

Just picked up an installed my napa gas shock. Awesome! The 40 lb is definately the way to go. Thanks again to Rick. I went to Carquest and Napa. Got weird looks at both places as well as a "where the heck did this come out of" type question, but only Napa had it. For the record, it is a different brand. The stock one looks to be an Attwood part, this one is another brand altogether. Let's hope it is more durable. 23 bucks with tax.
