Hey everyone. I am considering buying a 2000 super air and it has the python 440 hp engine in it. My questions are this...is this engine going to eat up a ton more fuel than the gt-40? I only wakeboard behing the boat? I heard also that there is a ton of torque and hard to control. Is this correct as well? It has perfect pass digital pro so will that tend to control the engine too? I just don't want to buy this boat and have to end up spending as much on gas as I do on a boat payment every month. Thanks for any info.

RE: python 440hp engine...fuel consumption?!
It will use significantly more gas. Pythons also tend to vibrate a bit more than other PCM engines. Even so, I would love to own one, and would not dismiss this boat. I'm sure PP will keep it under control.
BTW, the horsepower rating on the Python is 425, not 440.I own and operate Silver Cove Marine, which is an inboard boat restoration, service, and sales facility located in Mooresville, North Carolina. RE: python 440hp engine...fuel consumption?!
The Python is the biggest beast on the water I've ever seen/heard. Jeff is right, and it will eat up your wallet in gas money, but it all really depends on how power-hungry you are. If you really don't care about the roar or grumble your boat makes, its probably not worth the extra money. But, there's nothing like having a Python in your boat, and the fact that they're discontinued makes them that much more special and rare. Also says something about the previous owner, and that the engine new was about a 10K upgrade if I'm correct. I'd just take that to show that the previous owner really cared about the boat and put a lot of money into it. No one buys a Python w/o knowing what they're getting into...I Nautique, therefore I am.

We have a PAN Python, and we love the boat. The engine is super torquey, and it makes some great noise running across the lake. Our boat is set up with a 14x18 prop and the 1.23 powerslot. I think the V drives come with the "shorter" ratio, 1.46? which would allow you to run an even bigger prop if you're worried about fuel consumption. We use about a tankt (30 gallons) for a full day on the water which would include boarding, pulling tubes, and just cruising. Let's say that's double an Excalibur or GT40, that would be an extra $30/day, you'll have to decide if it's worth the noise, vibration etc.. to have all that power.
Don't forget that the Python is probably about 200-300 pounds heavier than a GT40 or Excalibur, so in a Super Air that means more ballast....

Python
Well I have the PYTHON in my 2000 Ski.
502.435 hp.8.2...PCM.I have talked with the guys at the PCM Factory about it ..I don't think you can get the Python, that I have any more.
if so ,they did cut back to the 8.1...motor..Yes ,it is a little more money for gas,,I have NO vibration anywhere..We run about 23 to 30 sometime.never run it hard...But I do know this ...its is a Beast on the water...But whichever Boat each like is what one goes with...Mayself..the power is there if I need it..I have pulled 6 Doubles Tubes.with big people in them..No problem!!!!..then I hit each up for some GAS money,,,

RE: Python
I also thought there are 2 different Pythons. One 8.1 (425hp) and one 8.2 (430hp). They started with the 8.2 in '98-'99 and in 2001 the 8.1 was introduced... Correct me if I'm wrong.230 with ZR6 running on propane

I actually have the python in a 2001 SAN and can tell you it is a blast. The sound of the engine is extremely unique. The power is absurd; I can easily run 2000lb and 8-9 guys in the boat and still have no problem getting out of the hole.
To answer your question, yes, you will burn more gas. As much as some make it sound No, the engine doesn't struggle as much especially when loaded. There are ups and downs to having the Python. It does use more gas and it vibrates a bit more that the gt40. You will notice this most while standing on the platform. Also, keep in mind it is more difficult to work on and maintenance and parts will often cost more.
The torque has never been a problem for me in term of control and yes the PP will take care of the speed control sufficiently. I would really like to see the torque curve numbers on the Python though. It seems like you really notice the power more about 2 seconds after taking off. Where other boats seem to struggle on the latter part before plaining the Python pulls like no other.
Would I ever change buying this boat, absolutely NOT. That being said this boat is not for everyone. You need to choose what your needs are in a boat, evaluate them and decide appropriately.
PCM did have two versions of the python. At some point they went from the 8.2 (502) to the 8.1 (496) python. But I I'm not sure when since I have a 01 SAN and was told that by theVIN # I have an 8.2.
Either way, sorry for the long-winded response, I hope I didn't create more confusion for you. Good luck.

Scooby,
I got a copy of the dyno plot from PCM. The 8.2 engine shows it's making about 400 ft. lbs of torque at 1500rpm! The torque curve rises slightly with no dips to its peak at 3800rpm, which yields its max torque of ~504 ft. lbs of torque.
If you want the fax of the sheet, call PCM, or PM me and I can fax it to you...

PYTHON ENGINE WORTH ANY MONEY
I Have the python 8.2L in a super pro air nautique 1999. The noise of the engine is crazy drowning out any other boats especially those efforts of mastercraft. Here in Ireland we pay about $1.80 for a litre of petrol. Sure it's a thirsty engine at full belt but while boarding its efficient enough. You only live once and if you are worried about the cost of petrol relative to the boat, you've little to worry about. Buy one if you can.
