Swim platform rubber decomposing

Hello,

The rubber on the swim platform of my 2004 226 Air has deteriorated to the point that touching it leaves a black residue all over hands, clothes, feet, etc. and it's transferred all over the boat. Does anyone have a recommendation for either cleaning or treating it to prevent this? The boat is stored under a cover but the swim platform is pretty much exposed to the elements year round.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Yep, that's Sano for you...

I would suggest replacing the Sano with SeaDek. NautiqueParts doesn't list a kit for the 226 platform, but the 226 and the 220 have almost identical beams, and I would GUESS that the platform is likely exactly the same. They offer a SeaDek kit as a replacement for the Sano on the 220. Please verify that the platforms are the same with NautiqueParts before ordering though!

I second the Sea Deck as Jeff recommends. Mine actually got brittle and cracked. Actually pinched people and caused some minor bleeding.

I have heard of the cracking too. Some even report that old Sano peels up and breaks, leaving sharp edges that can cut you.

Sea Deck is an option. I also recently ran across this company. While I may be banished for posting something non Nautique it looks sharp.

The material on the Mastercraft does look sharp. I did recently see one at a boat show however that was peeling up around the edges, and it was new. I looked at it pretty closely and I felt the material was quite rigid for the swim platform application. I think the safest replacement for the Sano is still Seadek.

You are correct Jeff, and I was one that had a couple guests get cut before I peeled the stuff off. . I actually had an issue with it as Correct Craft wouldn't warranty it at first, then all they would do was replace it with the same Sano. I think after a lot of back and forth, they ended up giving me partial credit toward Sea Deck... Sea Deck is the way to go for sure.

The product I linked is not the OEM supplier for MC. So what you saw and felt is not theirs. MC's platforms we'll just say have had done delaming issues because of them trying to give you a rounded edge. They fixed that for 2015 by installing rivets to help on the curved surfaces.

Just put seadek on my 220. Love it.
