I had the boat out today and it ran just fine for the first 3 hours... we turned it off for a few mins for everyone to jump in and cool off and swap skiers... when I went to start the boat again nothing!... the throttle for whatever reason will come loose from the side of the boat and hang freely which is super annoying and dangerous so idk what to do about that.. but the main issue is it won't start. when I push the start button the starter is not engaging and then the check engine light comes on... I feel like it's going to be electrical... we checked the resistance on the kill switch that is working just fine and there aren't any visible wires in that area other than the kill switch... so I am at a complete loss... we thought maybe the throttle continuously coming loose has something to do with it idk... has anyone else had this problem? and is there a spot to plug in a code reader of any kind to see what the check engine light is for?? any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!! TIA its a 2007 sv211

yeah I figured there would be a switch for that... but its the silver ring that holds the throttle in place that will slide out and let the throttle free spin and then you can line it up and push it back in... I made sure it was in neutral ... do you know where this switch is located by any chance? I'll have my husband take a look at the whole assy

The neutral safety switch on my boat is on the top of the transmission. There are two yellow wires leading to it. One from the starter and one from the solenoid. If your throttle lever is spinning freely it might seem like it is in neutral but might be a little off center and thats all it takes for it not to let the starter operate. Try playing with the throttle just a little bit back and forth with you hold down the start button and see if the starter engages.

I looked at the transmission last night and didn't see anything that looked like a switch I will look at the started and go backwards... we tried messing with the throttle and pushing start multiple times... if I can't freely move the throttle lever on the transmission does that mean it's in neutral? or will it not move unless you use the throttle?

okay well I just put it in "reverse" and it started to turn over... I am going to go back out after breakfast and hook up the fake a lake and give it another go... so that brings me to my next question... is there some sort of snap ring my throttle lever might me missing to hold the chrome ring in place...I feel like anytime I hit wake too hard it jolts loose from the side of the boat and will spin freely... causing this issue again

There is a snap ring in there. See the picture below.
Not sure how damaged your throttle arm is, but NautiqueParts carries them if you need a new one.

the neutral safety switch doesnt look like a conventional switch. The "switch or sensor" part if you will is on the inside of the tranny. Im not sure if your model boat has the same set up but mine is on the top of the tranny and has a wire running from the starter to it and also from the starter solenoid to it. It sounds like your assumption is correct, somehow your throttle is not in neutral when it is at top dead center. The safety switch is designed so that it will not let power to the starter if the boat is in gear.

Thanks for all the help... Nautique said that the throttle control assy can wear out over time allowing the throttle arm to come off like mine is... the set screw and I guess that shaft it's on wears out... they said to replace whole control assy. so I am hoping the cables just disconnect and reconnect without an issue.. I would take it somewhere but I live in South Georgia and they're all about that "salt life" outboard engines everywhere lol... I talked to the head service guy at Lake Cumberland Marine and he spoke with Nautique for me he was a ton of help!! The throttle is back in neutral and lined up I checked all that.. now I guess I just need to buy this and replace it to prevent this from happening again.
