    Good Tires Needed

I've got a single axle trailer for my Sport Nautique and have had the worst luck with the tires. Twice I've thrown the tread on road trips. Not fun and the family gets really nervous when that happens. Not to mention the hazzard to others. After the first time I bought some Carlyle (spelling) and one of them threw a tread.
So what's an excellent trailer tire? Goodyears?
sorry for the lame question but I thought I'd throw it out there anyhow

I really really really like the cooper radial trailer tires.

Carsile and titan are at the absolute bottom of my list.

Goodyear is lower than cooper, but they are not bad.

We have the Goodyears on our double axle. No problems and minimal treadwear, they are good in my book and I will keep buying them.

Have had carlyle, they did not last but were old to begin with.

No experience with the coopers so I cannot say.

Something you may want to look at is the load rating fo the tire. With a single axle you should get the highest load rating you can.

I've had 3 tandem axle trailers since '94 with Goodyear Marathon radials and have had good luck with them.

I know that a lot of Sport Nautiques are sold with single axle trailers but that's a lot of weight to carry on one axle. You might consider a tandem axle trailer for the weight capacity and peace of mind that 2 extra tires can give.

I have a Single axle trailer, that gets a lot of use. It has Goodyear marathons on it, they have been great, when its time, I'll put another set of them on it.

Look carefully at the rating on the tires. Trailer tires are not all rated the same. I would pick a tire rated for more weight than I carry rather than one that should do.

              KT,

My neighbor had this problem 3 summers in a row. Only uses his trailer once per year for a 700 mile round trip. He always replaced with the same tires that came with the boat from the manufacturer. He finally figured out that by the time he threw a bunch of gear in the boat, he was exceeding the capacity of the tires quite a bit. Upgraded to a tire with a higher load rating and has not had a problem last two years. For what it's worth. BKH

I have had very good luck w/ Tow-Masters, reasonably priced and made by Goodyear. When i tow, its 200 miles each way and 100+ degree temps are the norm.

I would stay away from the Carlisle, my friend had some on his 2004 travel trailer and the cords seperated, it was a defect in the tire. We took it into the dealer and Carlisle only has a two year warranty on their tires, this tire was 2yrs 6 months and they wouldn't do anything about it! Good Year has an eight year warranty. I have had good luck with the Good Year Marathons also.

Same story with a friend and Carlisle tires and I've heard a few other similar stories about them too.

First, make sure you are using 6 ply rated tires, step up to the next load rating if possible. Next, buy some tire covers if your trailer ever sits outside. Third, check your tire pressure frequently, run max pressures (cold).

I have had very few tire or bearing issues but I check this stuff like crazy. Every time I fill the tow vehicle's gas tank when towing I check temperatures of each tire and bearing with my hand. If anything is too hot to touch I start to watch it (not counting brake hubs after braking down an offramp).

IMHO, the best low cost trailer tires are Greenball. Last summer I paid $62.00 each after researching many brands. I run Goodyear Marathons on my single axle boat trailer and the Greenballs on the tandem axle trailer. Both brands have performed very well.

Also, absolutely stay away from vehicle tires as the sidewalls are not stiff enough to prevent excessive flex when used on trailers. This is a leading cause of trailer sway when towing.

I had a pop-up travel trailer that ate tires at an alarming rate. The tires would either bubble and blow or would pitch the tread. It turns out that the axle was out of alignment (wheels were just slightly toed in). I had a guy heat up the axle and bend it and all is groovy.

You might want to look into this before you spring for yet another set of tires.
