knock sensor change out, now throwing code

    http://www.planetnautique.com/vb5/fo...r-knock-sensor

so iv'e been following the above thread about a members knock sensor troubles on a 5.7 excaliber like i have. over the winter i changed out my knock sensor with a new one from nautique parts simply because the cap end had broken off that holds the wire on, the sensor itself was fine. went out on day 1 and no problem, but halfway through day 2 i got the "knock sensor see dealer" error code.

so would just changing the knock sensor out, in and of itself, throw the code requiring it to be cleared by diacom? i was running last years gas out, but it ran great and the fuel was properly stabilized?

just found this thread with interesting info ... http://www.planetnautique.com/vb5/fo...sensor-failure

this member had the same scenario as me, and says "As I was playing around with all the buttons I discovered that after pushing and holding the "M" button on the left gauge for 30 seconds it went away- which is the RPM's and the digital provides voltage, et, etc... The contact dealer message went away and we have had it out three times with no message."

anyone know what the "M" button is for? heading to search the manual ...

well, the "M" button is just the mode button and below is all i found in the manual. basically just says you can manually cancel the alarm but that it would present itself again if the condition persists ...

ok so here's the latest ... i took the new knock sensor back out and cleaned off all the thread sealant that comes painted on the threads. i also stuck the old sensor back in but still got the error code and could not clear it as mentioned above with any of the buttons. the new one is now in and torqued to spec. both sensors measured the same resistance on the bench.

so it looks like the one and only way to clear the code is via diacom? i kept seeing mention of a manual procedure to clear the codes in old threads but no one ever actually noted how ... is anyone aware of a manual method to clear the error codes aside from using diacom software?

          fascinating read here ... http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/d...%241-00-a.html

describes how to jumper the DLC and put the ecm into "service mode", which supposedly will display all codes via a flashing LED and allow you to clear all codes. am curious if any among us has done this???

obd666, let me know if you figure this thing out...I am going to try to replace my fuel filter and hope it helps. My boat had old gas in it from a previous owner.

BTW, I did have a guy clear my code and it popped back up the next day. Same as before...3,500 rpm under load.

here's more great knock sensor info ... http://www.planetnautique.com/vb5/fo...k-sensor-issue

apparently, the code (mefi-4 DTC code 44) is thrown when the ecm detects trouble with the knock sensor circuit, and not when it actually detects knock. would love to have some of our MEFI ecm guru's chime in to confirm or deny that though ...

anyway, am going to pick up one of these rinda codemates to confirm said code and clear it, then see if it comes back again with fresh gas and clean threads

directly from Rinda, http://www.rinda.com/marine/marine.htm ... will probably be about that by the time i pay shipping. the link i posted above shows you how to do it without the plugin if you're adventurous.

Take a look at this http://www.pleasurecraft.com/manuals/PCM-ECM-07.pdf

Do a search on Knock Sensor. If the code is 326 it is most likely bad gas. If it is 327, then most likely it is a faulty wire....

in 2007 they went to a totally different controller called "ECM-07" which has those codes and would apply to your 220. prior to that (at least back to 2003) they used a "GM Delphi MEFI 4" controller that only has dtc codes 14 thru 81. also, the code reader above wouldn't work on your ecm ...

here is more detailed info on MEFI 4 ... http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/MEFI/

and here is an interesting detail about stored DTC codes and how long they are stored by the ecm before they will clear on their on (50 engine starts, really?!?!?! lol)

here is some clarification on the mefi-4 codes. dtc 43 when knock is actually detected, dtc 44 when the the ecm cant talk to the knock sensor. i should receive the codemate scanner this week and be able to determine which one i have, then clear it ...

so i ended up having dtc 44, and am happy to report the rinda codemate cleared it as advertised. i would say this is the "go to" alternative to diacom software and trips to the dealer.

Got the techmate pro on eBay for $325 + I need to get the $49 connector. I'm going to check it out this weekend.

I'm sure It will clear the code. And hope it doesn't return.
