Help Get my Boat Running! 05 210 with PCM330

New to the Site but I have been through many of the threads researching especially related to the fuel control Cell. I'm stuck so please help me get my boat running, Thanks in advance

    Boat: 2005 210 Team Edition
    Engine: PCM 330

Back Story: I bought the boat about a month ago. It had been sitting unused for about a year. The previous owner wanted to water test it before I met to test drive it the boat. When I got there it wasn’t running. The old owner said she ran the boat and took it around the lake for a cruise. It started to die and shut off. She restarted it and headed back to the dock and it kept dying and increasingly was hard to start. The boat eventually would not restart and had to get towed in. Needless to say I got there helped put it on the trailer and bought the boat……. I did the work below and still cannot get the boat to run other than briefly starting for a second.

    Work so far
    1. New high pressure fuel pump (verified 52ish + PSI at the Rail)
    2. New fuel filter
    3. New distributor cap and Rotor (verified spark at one of the plugs with a tester)
    4. Gas tank Drained of old gas and new gas put in, added 2 cans of seafoam
    5. Kill switch (verified that when the clip is in placed fuel pump kicks on)
    6. LP pump was supposedly replace last year (I can hear it kick on when I cycle the ignition)
    7. Battery’s charged up

Current State: After changing all the parts above the boat started and ran for about 15 seconds then dies again. It sputtered and died. The boat would not restart. I had it on the trailer and tried to start it after sitting for a week and it fired up instantly, I shut it down after about 3 seconds because I didn’t have it in the water. The next day I go to take it to the lake to test it and again fire it up instantly on the trailer run it for 3 seconds and shut it down. It started and sounded perfect (I ride a friend’s 210 with a PCM 330 regularly it sounded identical) and I shut it down after a second or two. I took it to the lake, put it in the water and it started instantly and ran for 10 seconds and shut off. It sounded like it was shut off when it died. The boat would not restart after multiple attempts.

I’m at a loss for what the problem might be, any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

I would have someone start it while you monitor the fuel rail pressure to see if it drops off.

Sounds like the LPP. Does the LPP have black paint on it?? If yes probably the original unless the owner painted the replacement before install, if no paint it likely is a replacement, remove it and inspect and clean could be worth a try.

Did you check the fuel pickup line. I bought my boat after it sat on dry land for a year. The ethonol had seperated from the fuel and the sandy residue gummed up my fuel filters (both of them) and the fuel pickup line. Once we replaced the filters, cleaned up the pickup line and drained the fuel tank it ran great. That was a year ago and no problems since then. If it isn't that, I would be no help. But, good luck!

I assume it would take longer to create a vacuum, but may want to check the gas tank vent line for a clog. A long shot, but if nothing else is helping...

We have a 2004 216 Limited with the 5.7 liter. Sputtered and died on Friday out on the lake similar to your discription. Engine would crank, but couldn't get it to run.
Never start without water - even for a few seconds

Here's what we did to get going without a lot of resources:
            1. Drained fuel/water from FCC per PCM instructions.
            2. Replaced fuel filter.
            3. Tried to start (with water supply) after reassembly, sputtered and coughed but didn't run.
            4. We could hear the black low pressure fuel pump working when we'd activate the key pad (two orange lights).
            5. Opened the FCC while it was still mounted and verified fuel was in the bowl.
            6. Drained fuel from FCC, replaced hi-pressure fuel filter (probably not necessary)
            7. Put about a dropper full of Lucas injector cleaner/treatment in the fuel filter cavity where the hi-pressure pump would pick it up, put the rest into the full tank of fresh fuel.
            8. Reassembled the FCC and restarted (with water supply of course)

            Results:
Rough running initially, motor would not take much more than an idle at first. Gradually, after about 10 minutes or so, idle was strong enough to run up the rpm to 1250. Almost immediately, rpms fell off to about 700, but then gradually climbed back to the original 1250 without input. Motor, while clearly not at 100%, ran strong enough to risk in-lake testing. Splashed in the lake and did similar tests, and testing under load. We needed a way to mix the cleaner with the fresh fuel. Eventually, all was good, ran two more tanks through the system under normal operations and we're good to go. Our theory was I did a bad job with the fuel stabilizer and failed to store with a full tank minimizing the effects of moisture in the tank resulting in clogged injectors. YMMV...

The hi-pressure fuel pump was really not necessary but we were throwing parts at the problem at that time, $84.00 of insurance...

Did you check your throttle position sensor? My neighbor lost hers when it cracked and failed.

Even if you hear the LP pump come on, doesn't necessarily mean it's pumping. I agree with jbach.

Thanks everyone did some trouble shooting and redneck engineering and it’s still not starting. I believe I narrowed it down to the fuel injectors I don’t believe they are being triggered.

Today I hooked up the fuel system to a fresh 5 gallon tank of gas. I verified that the low pressure pump is indeed working. The pump was pulling gas from the gas can and visibly emptied it. I checked the high side as well and it’s a continuous 55PSI. using some starting fluid the motor fired for a second and shut down, I repeated this a few time and it fired every time. Next I took the relieve from the fuel pressure gauge and ran it to the throttle body. Cranking the boat I manually let fuel through the relief on the gauge and the boat fired up and kept running as fuel was slowly dripped in to the intake. I had it running for a few minutes like this until I shut off the fuel and it died. Next I pulled the fuel injector rail and two injectors. They visibly looked ok. I tried to fire the boat up with the injector out and it did not spit any fuel out. Put everything back together ran it again off the fuel pressure gauge for a bit but would not run normally. I did notice that when it was running the RPM gauge was not reading anything, i don't know if that's significant or not... Next I changed the Throttle position sensor and still would not run. Help….where do I look next?

Also pulling the fuel rail off on the Port side I found this connector under the injector wire harness not connected to anything, what is it? Does any one have an engine harness and wiring diagram?

It typically doesn't mean a whole lot. There are several unused harnesses throughout the boat. I know I have found a bunch of them, but I think there is a "common" main harness that has the plugs in case you got the 5.0, the 5.7 or the 6.0L options. I have found spare wires for lights, the shower power connections... So unless the fuel injectors are unplugged, you should be fine.

Probably not helpful, but I would move on to consider electrical side. Maybe ignition relay or something is telling pcm engine is not running and turning off fuel injectors etc even though fuel side is fine.

I'm on the electrical side trouble shooting now. I confirmid with the key on the injectors have two 12v signals. When you crank it voltage doesn't change. If I crank it and manually ground the injector the injector will fire. What gives Ecu the ok for the the injectors the signal to fire? Crank sensor and map sensor may be my next move

If you're really Jeff Goldblum, can't you pay someone to fix this?

I have a 05 210 as well. I had a lpp fail last summer. It should have a in line fuel filter close to the lpp. It is a screen filter about the size of your thumb. I also have had a very similar problem as you have this year. Distributor cap, rotar button, and a cam position sensor semmed to fix it. The cam sensor is in the distributor on my boat. I will be very interested to hear what fixes your problem. Good luck.
