    GT40 - toasted the belt(s) - 99 SAN

Hey everyone, I have a 99 SAN with the GT40 and have encountered a problem and need help on where/how to diagnose. The other night out on the water at cruising speed I started smelling burning rubber. Opened the engine hatch and noticed some small rubber particles on the hatch from the belt that goes on the alternator (not sure which one that is called), belt still spinning properly. Also noticed a new squeak coming from what sounded like the alternator pulley but hard to tell. Shut the motor off and examined the belt and it was chewed up on one side and appeared to be on the pulleys sideways. This belt was changed in 2012. I got to the dock and went and got my extra belt out of the truck and put it on. Got about a mile from the dock cruising speed and smelt the burning smell again. Popped the hatch and the new belt (not sure how old it was as it has been my spare for a few years) had popped and was laying in the bottom of the hull.

Few things to note: alternator spins freely by hand when I took the original belt off. Boat was not overheating and the other belt is still spinning fine and perfectly in tact.

Is it possible that the original belt was giving out and i put the new one on to tight causing it to pop? Or maybe the new belt i put on was to old? Or does it sound like one of the pulleys/bearings is going out?

Either way I would love to her all of your thoughts and how you would attack this. Thanks in advance!

Did you recently replace your alternator or pulley? Could there be an alignment issue between the alternator's pulley and the water pump / crank pulley? How about belt tension? IIRC there should be about 1/4" of deflection when properly tightened.

New belts are available at Nautique Parts http://www.nautiqueparts.com/beltsetfordengines.aspx

Haven't ever replaced the alternator but maybe I should? Maybe I over tightened the new belt I put on but I wouldn't think it would pop in less than a minute of driving but I could be wrong...
