2002 Sante Overheating Change water pump impeller

    Hi Everyone,

Went out on the lake yesterday and boat started heating up. it was at about 190 and started to get that smell of "burning" that no one likes to see. It seemed as though no water was going through pipes , or very little, and into the block. idling at low speeds was the worse. I took out the thermostat to do a test. The boat still started to heat up at idle speed but was not as bad. I then decided to take it out for a quick test. The temp level quickly went down to Zero as I was giving more speed and giving more gas. to make a long story short, with no thermostat the temp ran completely cold at higher speeds, but at idle speed and trolling temp would go up as far as 190 or even 200.

Anyone have any advice for me ?

Is it easy to change the water impeller ? Is there anyone who can show me how to replace this step by step ? I am hoping it can be done in the boat lift ? A great video would be good or if there is already a post that would be very helpful.

    Thanks fellow fans

Classic symptom of the cooling system pulling in air is the engine running hot at idle but cooling down at speed. Check all your hose clamps for good seals and ensure your water strainer gasket is in place and sealing properly. That said, you should probably replace the impeller if you did smell some burning.

Impeller is fairly easy to change and can be done in the boat lift. I'm fairly certain there is a thread on the board showing the steps somewhere. If you cannot find it, repost. I remove the pump to change it, but if you do so, mark it so you know which end is the top.

      HI guys,

Well I fixed the issue. Impeller was completely destroyed. Go Figure ... only 2 years old. How can it be this bad. Has anyone else seen theirs this bad.

My only problem now is that i dont know where half the rubber chunks are. DO you think they would have passed right through the system and out in the lake ....

For what it is worth early last year Nautiqueparts received a batch of defective impellers (they confirmed). I went through 3 in a matter of 7 hours of use. Nautiqueparts did make good on replacing the 3 but I will not put them in my boat as they are cheap OEM Chinese knock-off parts. Needless to say this left a bad taste with me. I would only use the OEM impeller from PCM which come in vacuum packed packaging with PCM on the packaging. The knock-off parts are in a small white box with the corresponding PCM part number label, which is misleading to make you think it is an OEM PCM part. This bad batch of impellers was not just limited to Nautiqueparts, but with the importer/ distributor as I have talked with other folks with different brand boats but same motor and the failures they experienced.

As far as the small pieces, my first hand experience is that some will be in the transmission cooler and the other pieces stuck just underneath the bypass flow in the thermostat housing.

On my 2002 SANTE it is located on the PORT side near the bulk head. The coolant hose goes from the strainer into the trans cooler. Mounted nearly verticle with drain plug towards the bottom.

I experienced similar overheating in my 2002 (though it has a ZR6). Engine was not circulating at idle but ran fine on a hose since the water was being pushed through. We finally found the problem, which was rare according to my dealer. I shredded a couple of impellers, and when the inside of the water pump was inspected turned out to have multiple gouges in the metal. No idea how this happened, but a new water pump fixed the problem. Might be something to look at if all else fails.
