I had a new belt put on my 99 SN GT40 couple of months ago. Only had it out maybe 4-5 times so far. I'm getting a squealing noise at cold starts for 5-10 seconds or so and when revving the engine fast. I'm assuming it's the belt. Should I just try tightening it a little to see if this resolves it? Where do I tighten it and how do I make sure I don't over tighten?

Get new belts http://www.nautiqueparts.com/beltsetfordengines.aspx
Download engine manual http://www.planetnautique.com/Correc...T-40Manual.pdf
Belts should be tightened so that there is 1/4" of deflection.

Hopefully it's just the belt and not a metalic squeaking noise that happens when a pulley bearing is going out because of over tightened belt
Sounds easy enough.
Isn't there a way to check the proper tension on the belt by pushing on it to see how much it gives? Not sure how to keep from over tightening?
Thanks

Checked the belt and it was very loose. Could spin the alternator easily. Got it a tight as I felt comfortable using a wrench as lever, but I can depress it more than a 1/4 ". Seems tight and like it should be enough. I would hate to over tighten it.

How big was the wrench? Generally speaking, you're not going to get it too tight without a rather large crow-bar, and when they say 1/4 inch in either direction, they really mean between there and a half inch. If it still squeaks at you, tighten it more.
With that engine, you do *not* want it too lose, as over time the alternator, which has a bracket that is designed to handle that tension, *can* actually come out of line with the rest of your pulleys and you'll start going through belts very fast.
