Heater with freshwater cooling?

I've got a 2001 SAN with a freshwater cooling system. Is it possible to have a heater installed with that? I know it isn't possible to get the hot water shower since the block is full of coolant... but I'm not sure about the heater. For those of you who have them, were they hard to put in or should I have my dealer do it? thanks.

you can have a heater on the CLOSED cooling system. Is that what you meant to say? The shower is only an option for the freshwater cooling systems. Haven't put one in but I don't think they are that hard to do.

I think you've got it backwards. Freshwater cooling systems are closed systems. Raw water systems are open (right?).

In the little bit of reaearch I have done, it appears that a heater is an option on the closed system. I have found several boats online that offer the option in a closed system, although I can't find anywhere that lists a heater for sale specifically for a closed system. I would check with Disount Inboard Marine.

Read this and see what you think. Closed cooling is the ZR6 because it uses the antifreeze to cool it. Freshwater cooling would be drawing water out of the lake.

Heaters work fine with closed cooling. My '03 196 with a 6 liter had one and it actually seemed to put out heat at idle better than any of the others I have had. Also, winterizing is much easier bucause the engine coolant is in the heater and lines, eliminating the need to drain and blow out the heater core. It was plumbed similiar to my '02 Excaliber, but a little different due to the 6 liter being a little different. This picture shows where the intake line plumbs in, if I remember correctly the output hose dumps in through the starbord side block drain, not sure about that since I didn't have to pull the hose off to drain it. (the heater hoses are the orange hoses)

No different heater core needed. What engine do you have?

I have the GT40 engine with Closed Cooling. It looks like I can probably install one... now just need to figure out if I should do it or have it done..

That is news to me. Can you post a picture of your engine? I have never seen the GT-40 with closed cooling on it.

Closed cooling has been an option for a couple of years. It was available on the GT-40's. It's a tight fit, but worth it for those that use their boats in salt or very dirty water. The heat exchanger is slammed under the Starboard exhaust manifold, making matienence to that side of the motor a joke.

Yes it can be done, call your local dealer of call west coast correct craft to see if we could do it. I believe that in some situations we are not allowed to instal accessories unless they were offered by the factory on that model, and I don't remember ever seeing a GT-40 closed with a heater.

the lake, ocean or river water is always going to be sucked up to cool someting and then dumped back into the lake, ocean or river via the risers. ( 99% of the time.)

the item being cooled will either be a heat exchanger (closed/fresh) or the block (raw/open).

salt or brakish water will always eat the risers whichever system is used.

i would assume anyone could add a heater or shower using the block drains and a small recirculating pump. the block only holds a couple gallons, so it would be a quick shower. 8)
