    G23 transmission help!

Ok guys looking for some advice. I was out riding yesterday (wake boarding - full ballast plus 6 passengers) and during one of my starts the boat was almost on plane then I hear the engine rev really high and the boat loses all thrust. I swim back to the platform and check for the prop...still there. Cycle the power and restart the engine, put it in gear and the prop shaft spins but no thrust in forward or reverse. Fortunately we were only about 100 yards from my dock so we swim it back and put it on lift. I get under the boat and manually spin the prop and the shaft at the front end under the little cooler in front of the engine hatch does not move?? I am certainly not mechanic, anyone ever see anything like this before?

Do you have a picture of the shaft you are talking about? Two things that immediately popped in my mind was 1) if its in neutral, its probably not supposed to spin, or 2) you somehow sheared the bolts to the drive shaft coupler.

The way you worded it is hard to follow... Are you saying when the prop was spun the coupling on the v-drive the shaft is attached too didn't spin? If so, sounds like the shaft might have sheared at the coupler, or the bolts broke on the coupler. Find it hard to believe the bolts would have all broke without you hitting something though and in that case the prop would show signs of damage.

So this is what I am talking about. If I put it in gear this gold coupling with the through bolts spins but the prop does not and vice versa if I manually spin the prop this thing does not spin.

I would suggest having your dealer look at it then. Sounds like you may have a more serious v-drive or transmission problem. Maybe broken shaft internal to the unit or the crutch discs have somehow worn to an extreme amount that when engaged they will not create enough friction to move the prop shaft.

Is it possible the key way sheared at prop or splines stripped at prop? Don't know which one the G has.

Your shaft is sheared somewhere after the coupler. If it is like most older nautiques, there is a collar after the coupler that should prevent the shaft from sliding out through the gland. (where the shaft goes through the hull)

As of yesterday they had not looked at it yet. Supposedly it will be today. I will let you guys know as soon as I get some news.

Sheared prop shaft. Waiting to hear if it is covered under warranty. I cannot imagine why it would not be. I did not hit anything, nothing wrapped around the shaft etc. I will be very disappointed in the brand if they do not cover it. I know this was an issue on the '13s with the smaller shaft, but this is a '14 with the 1.25" shaft and it happened up by the coupling, not near the prop......

There was a service bulletin for shaft replacement on the '14s. We had our boat stored at our dealer over the winter and on the paperwork when I picked it up, it was noted the shaft had been replaced...didn't even have to ask.

Dandy good to know. That makes me feel a little more confident that it will be covered under warranty. Will wait for the official word from MarineMax today.
