Big Problem with 2005 Team Edition 226

My brother in law owns an '05 Team Edition 226 w/ the corvette engine and internal cooling system.
On a recent trip to the lake, water started leaking from the bottom of the engine. He took it
to Sail -N- Ski in Austin, Texas who proceeded to quote him $2700 to repair the leak. Apparently
he needs a new internal water pump (not the raw water pump) and heat exchanger. I was wondering
if anyone here had any experience with this type of setup or repair. Also, if anyone knows of
another mechanic in Austin, Texas who works on Nautiques, I would be interested in that information
    as well.

    Thanks in advance
    Wagsy

I've done heat exchangers before and they are not terribly hard. I'd buy and exchanger first and install myself. As far as the water pump goes I'm not sure I've ever heard of one going bad on a boat. I can see the excahnger causing a big leak but not the circulation pump. Hard to say without seeing it. If your not mechanically inclined the. I'd find a shop with a good reputation and good warranty over the price. I've not heard bad things about sail and ski.
