Fuel Gauge Issue - confirming

Hoping someone can confirm what I believe is the issue I'm having on my 205 Air Nautique 216. I have only just bought the boat and on the first couple of times out I noticed the fuel gauge would only read intermittently. Most of the time it stayed at E, made a ticking sound and moved ever so slightly when it ticked, about twice per second. Third time out now and it is doing this all the time and I cannot get a reading of how much fuel is in the tank.

All wiring connections look good, and if I put an ohm meter on the fuel tank sending unit I get about 95 ohms, which seems to be right for a tank that is visibly half full. I'm thinking I have a faulty gauge issue and that I need to replace it as the sender seems to be fine, but I'm hoping someone else has had this issue and confirm before I purchase a replacement.

Not sure i understand. You put a meter on the sending unit. Did you simply pull it out and move the float up and down and see if gauge moves? That would help determine if gauge or sender.

I unplugged the sending unit from the wire connector close by and put the meter on it. As I could see the tank was half full the ohms sounds about right. If I shake the boat a bit I can see the resistance change a bit as the fuel sloshes around in the tank. I didn't remove the sender at this point. The gauge itself behaves the same whether it is connected to the sender unit or not. Only difference is I get a low fuel warning on the tach display when the sender is unplugged.

Just to bring some closure to this post, I replaced the fuel gauge yesterday with a new one and it now works perfectly, so I was right that it was the gauge and not the sender in this case.
