Purchased salvage PP Stargazer from boat with engine fire...questions...

Was able to purchase for very low $$ the perfect pass stargazer module, display and GPS unit from a boat that had an engine fire and was being salvaged. GT-40 engine; same as my 1997 Ski.

At this time, I have no idea if the module and display unit are OK. Before I invest in the servo, servo cable and throttle cable, would like to confirm that the parts I have are working.

Does anyone know if you can power up (ie: apply 12 volts) to the module/display/GPS setup on a bench to do a basic power on validation WITHOUT the servo connected?

I'll post my progress here in the thread as I work though this.

    Thanks in advance!

Call perfectpass - they know you're still going to have to get the servo, so they will make some money on the deal, and they have been 100% helpful to many of us in the past.

OK...wasn't sure how helpful they would be. Their website is pretty clear they won't support roll-your-own type efforts.

This isn't "roll your own" - you have an official product, from them, and they should be able to help you - worst case, they say no?

OK - good advice. PP advised the following:

"Yes, you can power it up without the servo motor attached. Leave it powered for a couple minutes and make sure the GPS gets a lock. The message in the upper left corner will read "GPS" when it is locked"

Bam. Never hurts to ask, especially since anything that breaks will simply net them more revenue

...UPDATE: Unit initially failed power up testing. Display was fubar...dead. I carefully opened it up and discovered one of wires in the wiring harness was broken off at the point where's it is soldered to the mainboard. Resoldered and bingo...unit powers up and gets a GPS lock. Also was able to locate a used servo motor so now I just need a servo cable harness and new throttle cable. Looks like this may all come together and work!

Nice job. That is always super fun when you can fix stuff like that!
