999.9 hour meter club - nautique gateway box problem

I have to tell you I was very disappointed when my boat turned 999.9 hours. Not necessarily because I have high hours on my boat, which I do, but because we waited and waited and it never turned to 1000.0. Come to find out that it is because the faria gateway boxes Nautique purchased can't show over 999.9. It is not the gauge or the engine ECU. It is the gateway box.

I confirmed with Faria, who was quite kind and told me to install an hour meter as the boxes are not repairable and are no longer manufactured. And mine is not defective, they are just like that.

I have a call in to Nautique to see if they care. I feel that lots and lots of people have very expensive boats, and for Nautique a company that has making boats for a very long time to have this problem is terrible. In order to make sure I change oil and do other maintenance on schedule I will have to install an hour meter somewhere. It has to be set to run off tachometer or engine, not the ignition.

Below shows this was a known problem at least as far back as 2011. (Incidentally the gauge does not start at zero. The gauge will always read 999.9)

If anyone knows an inexpensive way to read engine ecu for hours that would be helpful and sincerely appreciated.

Well, the dealer just got back to me. He contacted Correct Craft, and here is the response:

"Yes, they got back to me yesterday. Apparently the guage does store info and when you put a new gauge it starts at zero. The computer on the engine, however, does not zero out. They told me that they have even had it where sometimes the engine hours, on the gauge, will reset it self or
not go over 999hrs. Nautique is working with the gauge manufacturer to change this because, like you, customers would like to have the total hours displayed. In the mean time the next time the boat goes to the dealer, we can put the engine on the laptop and get a computor print out of the engine hours".

So, you can find out the hours at the dealer's, but not correct the new gauge! Like you said, has to be a better way.
