Water exiting by thru-hull shaft

Friends, I'm in the winterizing process and after changing oil, remove, drain water and re-install 2 engine block plugs, 2 exhaust manifold plugs, 1 tranny cooler plug, 1 engine circulation pump plug and 1 oil cooler plug I decided to fill the system with anti-freeze. To do this I removed the hose from water strainer and poor AF into this hose while running engine. After 4 gallons (maybe 1-2 minutes of run time) I shut down and noticed a fair amount (maybe .5 quart) of AF exiting the hull where the prop shaft exits. I don't think this is good and want some thoughts on 2 things.
- Should that much have exited in 1-2 minutes? If yes than great, if not then what could be wrong
- What is best way to verify I have enough AF in system (none exited the exhaust).

Instead of pouring it in, it would have been better to pour the antifreeze into a bucket and let the engine pull it in from there. Probably not a big deal though.

The reason you saw some coming out of the shaft is because of the design of the dripless packing gland. Water is pulled into that to keep it cool, and it exits the boat at that point. That is completely normal.

If none came out of the exhaust, I would add more until it does. I usually use six gallons when I winterize mine.

Thanks Jeff for the reply. Just seems like quite a bit leaked out in the time the engine ran. It wasn't dripping by no means,

I am WI too (Menomonee Falls) and I also have a 2005 SANTE 210. Do you have a heater or shower? This is my 3rd winter with the boat (I have a heater) so I will not winterize for a couple more weeks, but I have all my fluids (trans, v-drive, and engine oil ready for the end of season ritural. I have not used anti-freeze for the last two winters and I will not use it again this winter. Bimmerboyz has a great write-up with photos for winterizing our engines:

Thanks Brick for the link to the write-up. That confirmed that I have everything covered. Only thing I did wrong was put teflon tape on the knock sensor plug. But I will fix that. I went back and forth about filling with anti-freeze and after talking with a few dealerships and reading other threads I decided to take that extra step.

I don't have a heater or shower and am located in Tomahawk. I spend most of our time on the Minocqua chain and also get over to the Eagle River and Three Lakes chains. Getting the boat put away soon since winter in northern Wisconsin is just around the corner.

We have had our boat up to the Three Lakes chain and to Hayward. We have spent a few weeks in Minoqua ( Lake Kawagasaga) before our SANTE. It is a beautiful area. Enjoy your boat, I love mine.
