UFP Model A-60 Breakaway cable replacment

Does anyone have any experience with the replacement of the trailer breakaway cable for a UFP A-60? I failed to unconnect it from my tow vehicle last night and pulled it out of the housing etc.

    Paxdad,
This manual should give you all the info you need.

I had to replace the internal coupler shock absorber this spring in my A-60. I think you may have to disconnect your master cylinder to slide the mechanism out if your breakaway cable pulled out completely (and is loose from the coupler). If the cable only pulled out enough t actuate the brakes, then you should be able to release the brakes manually and install a new breakaway cable clip.

      BrickBrock,
Thanks. The cable came out completely..... Just ordered a new one. And it does appear that I will have to disconnect the master cylinder which really sucks since this system is a pita to bleed. Looks like it will be a winter project for me as I don't plant to winterize until Dec 1.

I did the same thing this summer and had to replace. Never had to disconnect the master cylinder though. The biggest PITA was putting the clips that hold the pins back on. Everything else was pretty easy.

It's been a few years since I've had to replace a cable, but I did not need to remove the master cylinder. A couple of tricks to make the job easier: 1) The clips can be removed and replaced using a pair of snap ring pliers. 2) Make a set of "dummy" pins out of pvc pipe or wood dowel, match the diameter of the pins as close as you can. Slightly smaller is ok. They should be short enough to fit just inside the outer tube and allow the assembly to slide out the end of the tongue. The pins keep all of the loose parts together and make reassembly much easier. The manual referenced by BrickBrock is helpful.

Well I just finished the breakaway cable replacement and it was fairly easy to do. I was lucky in that I did not have to disconnect the fluid line as there was enough slack. One bit of advise is if you ever have to do this order the various plastic sliders that are part of the unit. Mine seemed ok but if you have the system that far apart you might as well replace them as well. A good pair of snap ring pliers is also a must.
