You have surge brakes. They are put on by compression of the tongue brake mechanism. The electricity is used when the reverse lights go on to send a signal to the brake controller to prevent the pressure of hydraulic fluid to the brakes and thus you can back up. Apply 12 volts of electricity to pin 5. Pin 1 has the bendy corner I think and 5 is squared.

If you had a 7 pin system it would be electric brakes on and off and those are not called surge brakes. your brakes are mechanically operated by force of the boat pushing into the tongue or in your case pushing the tongue into the trailer.

Whoops sorry about that as I have used it several times over the years. They do sell the piece that fits in the slot. It is really cheap. Your backup lights on the vehicle activate the solenoid.

They actually make a specific key to lock that out. It's specifically designed for the trailer. Here's a link to it. If you scroll through the pics in this add you'll see the old style (silver metal key) that this new style replaces. I know at least 5 guys using this new version with great success

There is always this option as well. I have it on my trailer but never used it. They are on Amazon for $5.77.
