    Engine Oil 2002 Super Air

Getting ready to do a service on the engine and tranny and I was curious what's a good recommendation of oil to use? We just bought the boat a couple months ago and I wanted to do a basic service on it any other things I should check or change?

    Thanks

Start by checking what engine, proper oil could vary depending on what you have.

Valvoline VR1 straight 40. You want the high zinc content for the GT 40.

Flat tappet GT-40 needs the ZDDP as mentioned above. You should spend a bit of time searching the oil topic here and on CCFan, quite a bit of good info out there.
Valvoline VR1 is a good oil for your motor, some guys prefer 20W-50 over the straight weight.

I used the Ford Racing Racing 20w-50 in our 83 Nautique. Is there a advantage with straight weight? I was told in the v-drive to use a 30W and dextron 3 in the trans.

            Thanks

The owners manual for my 2000 air dd says to run straight 40, that's why I use it. I'd be interested to hear why some choose 20w 50 instead.

I second the VR1 in the gt40, i have an 02san as well. The book calls for straight 40 but depending on your climate the 20-50 works also

I have always used a Fram filter on my other boat, is that still a good way to go on our 02?

Filter quality is very important - use a Motorcraft, Wix or Napa Gold.
Fram tested as total garbage in most independent tests I read. Recently saw testing that they did better in however I would still avoid their basic filters.

Whenever possible, fill the filter with fresh oil before installing, partially is OK also if that is all you can do.
And always double check the old filter gasket came off with the old filter. Write your hours and date on the new filter for quick reference.

Thanks, I think I will go with the Motorcraft.

On the 30W V-drive oil should I use detergent or non detergent?
