2002 SAN Timing Engine Question, New to boating! Thanks

Hello Gang. I'm new to boating and haven't seemed to have found an answer to this. Thanks for all your guys passion, I appreciate the knowledge out there. New proud owner of 2002 SAN. I have been doing a large tune up on it. I have a question, I don't want to screw the timing of the engine off at all. I was replacing the distributor cap and also the belts and impeller. I noticed when I was removing the belts the distributor cap had moved a bit from where it had been prior ( the cap was off and I could see the dial with the metal marker), so my concern is where did that come from? What does the upper circle on the belts do? The starboard side is alternator and port side is the fresh water pump, so is the timing of the distributor based off the lower circle (main engine) or the upper circle (which i don't know what it does)? I marked with tape the upper middle circle and when I move that it does not turn the distributor cap. Thanks, just don't want to mess up anything. So I guess is the distributor cap timing that it throws electricity to the plugs based off the main engine circle belt on the bottom? Sorry for my ignorance! I'm just a do it yourselfer!

might have to throw a pic up of what you are talking about, it may help. Also what motor is in the boat? GT-40 or the Chevy?

For your reference most of the manuals (for both the boat and engine) are on here, scroll up and you will see a Manuals/Brochures section. If you click on that and then scroll past all the model year boat info, there is a "other PCM manuals" section with a few PCM service manuals there for you as well.

Congrats on the purchase as well!

what turns this? i'm assuming the engine itself, i don't see any timing belt.

Excalibur is a GM block, should be 330hp version (up until 08 then it went to 343). Not sure what front end it has since the manual list a few different kinds with regards to raw water pump motive force (belt/direct drive off crank, etc)

That is the rotor, it is sitting on top of a long thin shaft (distributor shaft) that has a gear at the bottom. As the camshaft spins, it has a matching gear that is meshed with the gear on the bottom of the distributor shaft. The causes the rotation of the rotor, causing the current from the distributor to be directed to the correct cylinder when it is time to fire the spark plug.

Part #24 on page 10 of this manual... http://www.planetnautique.com/Correc...ls/2004PM2.pdf

here is the upper pulley i was referring to. don't know what this does? when i turn it nothing happens with the distributor. i've read the whole manual, very vague on engine specifics. thanks again

In the last pic you posted the upper pulley is the water pump pulley. Not for raw water like the pump lying in your bilge at the moment, but the engine water pump. Now the distributor at the back of the engine is turned by the camshaft via a gear. When the crankshaft turns (bottom pulley) it also spins the camshaft via a timing chain which of course then makes the distributor spin. If you have not loosened the lock-down bolt that holds the distributor in place then timing shouldn't have been affected. Put the cap back on with the plug wires in the correct order and you should be fine once all is buttoned up.

The one with blue tape on it is your water pump, the single purpose of that is to take the raw lake water (that is pumped in up into the engine from the raw water pump) and distribute it to the engine. It is the same as a V-8 engine, except there is no radiator to cool the water, so it uses the water from the lake as a once through system.

The bottom one is the crank pulley, it is bolted to the crank and through belts drives all the accessories on the engine (Raw water pump if belt driven, your alternator, and the water pump)

page 62 of this http://www.planetnautique.com/Correc...%20Manual2.pdf should give you a great idea of the flow paths of water through the engine/manifolds.
