What engine do I have in my '92 Sport?

I know it's a Ford. I'm thinking Windsor 351 but I am not sure. It's got a coil pack ignition system that needs to be replaced and I am trying to find the automotive equivalent and then convert that to marine. Does anyone know what automotive year this engine matches up to and if Windsor 351 was the engine they used back in '92?

I looked in my manual but couldn't find a definitive response. Seems it has the specs of a couple different engines.

I'd recommend just buying the marine part.

I'm considering that also. I just would like to know what the price difference looks like.

I'd still like to know what engine/year my boat is based off of though. Seems like a good thing to know.

Well a quick call to the dealership confirms that it is the 351 Windsor.

Discount Inboard Marine has the retro kit that you need. The parts for the Protec system are no longer available.

darrel409, haha yep I have that item open in my browser right now. My concern is that they are using generic parts for it, that I will be able to get a better quality system cheaper by using an auto. I'm starting to lean more toward that though. Seems like a much easier process to have everything shipped all together. I wonder who makes the parts for that conversion kit.

Wakebrad, call and talk to them. They are very knowledgable and helpful. Many electrical auto parts are dangerous to install under the motor cover. They will help make you feel confident in your decision.

I used Discount Inboard Marine's retro kit on my previous '91 sport. Easy to install and the guys at DIM were very helpful. Look at it this way, you can get electronic ignition to boot.

Well, I just ordered the kit from skidim. Turns out they use a high quality Mallory distributor so that's the last question I had. I haven't decided if I want to try to install it myself or not. I've never done timing before and my mechanic said he could do the whole thing for $150.

for $150 let him do it. It did take some time to install and I had the firing order off by 1.
