A couple of hopefully simple questions...

I bought my boat back in July of last year, it's my first boat so I have a lot to learn...

When I first bought my boat the steering was shot so my brother and I replaced it ourselves. After the replacement the steering was great all summer. Near the end of the season we started noticing that it would vibrate a little bit when we would turn sharp one direction. I cant remember now what direction that was, but when we would turn sharp the opposite way it was fine. Do you think there could be a problem in the steering or possibly propeller shaft, or is this something that is normal for older boats (500hrs)?

Also, I've heard different theories about the impellor. I've heard that an impeller should be swapped out once a year but I have also heard that it can last up to 10 years. We bought this boat used and don't know when the last time the impeller was changed. Is this something to be concerned about? and how much would it cost to replace?

You're probably feeling prop cavitation while turning. Are there any nicks in the propeller? It probably doesn't have anything to do with the steering system.

As for the impeller, if you don't know when it was last replaced, absolutely replace it now. No question. They're very inexpensive, and take about ten minutes to change on your boat. The one you need costs $21.95 from White Lake. Here's the link.

Concerning the impeller, I would replace it this year being as you don't know how old it is. That is a very valuable $20-30 insurance policy for an engine. A lot of people replace it every year, but I just take mine out of the water pump during the winter and store it inside coated with petroleum jelly to keep it from drying out. I just keep an extra in my toolbox onboard instead of changing it each season. Luckily, I've never had to use the spare.

I change mine every other year and save the old one in the boat for emergencies. Only once did it not look near new when removed. That said, always keep an eye on the temp gauge.

skinautique 2001, isn't petroleum jelly bad for rubber? I may be wrong but I think that it deteriorates it. I would think something like a silicon spray would be better to keep it moist. that is what I use on my drysuit seals to prevent dry rot.
