Last season, my 2002 SAN started giving me some troubles, and I am just wondering, if anyone out there has had this happen to their boat too! Please help! I really want to get out this summer behind my own boat.
The issue started with the boat periodically dying and the check engine light coming on. It was as if it was overheating, but temp gauge showed middle to high temps (not extremely high). If we shut the boat down and waited a few minutes, it would fire up and run sometimes with no problems and sometimes shut down automatically, with check engine light on a few minutes later.
After paddling in a few times or needing a tow, and not wanting to damage anything; I took it to two different shops, the second one being a Nautique dealer. The first shop stated the ECM was not responding, so they did not know where to begin looking for a problem to resolve.
The second shop just stored by boat for a month or so last summer, saying they were waiting for Nautique to send wiring schematics, which never happened.
With a basic wiring schematic I found here on PN, a mechanic friend and I were at one point able to bypass a relay and again were able to get back out on the lake. Briefly, until the same automatic shutdown started again more frequently. Lastly, the relays were replaced, because of another article I found on PN, and some love was given to the connection points.
This is where it gets fun. With all new relays the boat would allow the security code to go in but when you the start button was pushed, but instead of turning it over it seemed to short out and die.
Eventually, the ignition keypad quit lighting up and the boat was unresponsive, so troubleshooting is no longer possible. A couple different batteries were used.
I have finally located the most pertinent info from PCM and I am considering having someone replace the wiring harness. Maybe I should be looking for a new ECM too?
Yes, I am seeing the $$$$ rack up, but I am not sure what other options I have.
Any thoughts?
Thank you, thank you!
