76 SN: I think it's time to rebuild the carburetor?

I think it's time to rebuild the carburetor. It has been rebuilt a few times over the years. I just hate messing with it since it performs perfect when pulling a skier, etc. It has two little issues that are a bit annoying.

1 - After the boat warms up good, it'll start hard after you turn it off. This will only happen on warm days and the boat needs to sit for 5 - 10 minutes before it floods itself out. I have to pull the throttle all the way back while turning the engine over (opens up the choke) and it'll fire up. Of course, this makes it tough for other drivers.

2- The carb whistles every so often. Everything is tight but I suspect the gaskets are drying up, etc. I can shoot a little wd40 into the secondaries and it'll go away but it will come back later. It's more annoying than anything else.

Does anyone have any tips? Do you think a complete rebuild is necessary?

If a rebuild is necessary, do I have to buy the kit from CC or can I buy it at a local parts store?

I'm a little confused about your first problem. Are you saying when it's hot, and you shut it off, it doesn't want to start for another 5-10 min? And then when you can finally get it started you have to put a lot of throttle into it in order to get the choke flap to open?

If so, it sounds like a similar problem I'm having that I think is due to vapor lock. I'm going to get some fuel injection hose and insulate the fuel line coming out of the fuel pump. I'll let you know how it works next weekend.

As far as the choke, re-set it. Losten the 3 screws on the choke assembly. It's the little black round thing on the side of the carb, it should have 2 wires going to it. Don't take them all the way out or then the spring inside will go crazy. Pull the spark arrester off the carb and watch the flap. Turn the black choke case until the flap opens, then turn it back just until the flap closes. I think it's clockwise then CCW, but I can't remember. Either way, try that.

And like I said, I'll let you know how the insulated fuel line works out.

It doesn't sound like you need a rebuild, seeing as how it still pulls a skiier up good.

When it's hot, I'lll often have problems re-starting the boat after it sits for a short period of time. That is, when I shut it off and let it sit for 5- 10 minutes, I'll have a tough time re-starting it. However, it'll start fine if I shut it off and then immediately start it.

I think adjusting the choke assembly makes sense. What about the whistling sound?

Like I said earlier, it runs great, except for those two problems.

      Thanks for the help.

Sounds like when it heat soaks it's vapor locking. If you're going to kill it and wait for a few minutes, either open the hood or get some blocks of wood or something and crack it open. You might be able to get away with just turning on the blower.

The fuel in the line is just probably vaporizing because it's sitting still in that line with a really hot engine that doesn't have anything cooling it.

I'm not sure what the whisteling is. How loud is it?

Hmm, I'll try the idea on the hood and plan to adjust the choke setting. The whistling is fairly loud. It's annoying.
