    02 SN 196 Alternator & Stereo Upgrade

    Hi all,

I have a 02 SN 196 LE with the GT40 motor. I currently don't have access to the boat to look at it so I have a couple questions. Did all GT40's come with the 55 amp alternator or did some come with the 100 amp alternator upgrade? I am wondering this because I am looking into adding an amp to my current stereo set up which is only running off the head unit. I'm guessing the consensus would be that I should install the 100 amp alternator upgrade if it has the 55 amp when adding an amp. Also, what size amp is everyone using? I don't need anything crazy, just want to improve the sound and volume from what the stock clarion XMD3 head unit is putting out. Other electrical loads on the boat include Perfect Pass and the shower in the rear trunk. Let me know what you guys think.

    Thanks!

They were all 55 amp alternators. If you're just adding one amp I'm not sure it's entirely necessary to upgrade the alternator. The new digital amps are pretty efficient too

Kicker marine class-D KXM400.4 and no alt upgrade needed simply for this mild upgrade. 39 years and x number of hours would be my reason to consider a new alt, but not cause its a 55A.

Thanks for the info and good news guys. It looks like I'll go ahead and add an amp and will keep the stock 55 amp alternator.

Just and FYI. I run 2 amps and upgraded my boat speakers last spring. I run 6 in boat speakers with LED lights and two tower speakers with the stock 55 am alternator. I do run two batteries and switch one at the sandbar so I don't drain both batteries and they charge right back up and good to go.

If you get to the point of actually needing an upgrade to the alternator, here's a tip from an old drag racer: the 1994+ Mustangs used a bolt compatible "3G" alternator which is a 130 amp unit. I put one in my drag car in place of the same alternator we're talking about and it was a tremendous upgrade.

But the newer Class D amps are so efficient that unless you're running ridiculous watts of amplification, the stock system should be OK.
