Rust on bottom of PCM 5.7L manifold

I was changing my steering cable today and noticed a tremendous amount of rust on the bottom of a PCM 5.7L manifold. I know this is an area that tends to rust over the years but this just seemed to be more than what I would have expected. Should I be concerned??

Do you run the boat in saltwater? If not did the previous owner run the boat in saltwater? I run mine in saltwater and stuff around the engine gets rust/corrosion. Spray some WD-40 or Corrosion-X on it just to be safe.

here are some pics. This is a freshwater boat only. I know it looks like there is a hole in the manifold but it is an illusion. The black spot Click image for larger version

I would say you you need new exhaust manifolds. Getting those bolts out will not be easy.

How many hours do you have on the boat? I would say changed the manifolds and risers. Or atleast take them apart and look at the gaskets between the manifold and riser.

Can't comment on if they need to be replaced but I bet it's from not letting the engine vent after use. It doesn't require a lot of water in the bilge to make it very humid especially with a hot engine. I just prop open my engine cover for a day after use but I also leave it in a garage so it's no problem.

Hey, I had the same problem on my old Moomba. Had to Air Chisel them off because the bolts and manifold has fuzed on the center manifold port. I replaced the manifolds and risers and very glad I did because what looks bad on the outside is nothing compared to how the inside of the manifolds were.

But like Keithh2oskier said make sure your giving your engine the chance to breath at the end of the day. I'm also a very big fan of using engine protectant oil to wipe down the engine a few times throughout the season. Really helps keep the engine clean and rust free.
