What is this, hockey puck with wire?

What is this? It is laying under the Vdrive on my 96 Super Sport. I could follow the wire but it is in the harness between the gas tank and runs to the front. It looks like it could be mounted to something because slots are molded into the side but it looks like it is potted, like a temp sensor for my vdrive??

    Anyone know what this is?

Hard to tell exactly where it is located, but it looks like an air temperature sensor.

      Thanks for the replyMarineDR

It is laying on the floor almost directly under the vdrive. I didn't notice but I should have flipped/rotated the second photo 180 degrees showing it under the Vdrive on the floor. My 96 Super Sport does not have a air temp gauge but that is my concern, if this is a temp sensor should it be mounted to the vdrive and not laying on the floor. It is potted so there is some concern to keep the electronics inside dry. I did not see where it would mount to the vdrive.

do you have perfect pass? It could be a paddle wheel but the pics are hard to see.

No perfect pass yet, I found it as I reviewing my ballast install before I drilled the holes in the bottom of my boat.

It should be adhered to the hull in the location you mentioned. I can send you a picture later showing the location if needed. It's identical to the installation on my 1999 SSN.

Depth gauge sender. It probably broke loose. Most likely doesn't work either as their lifespan was typically

Makes sense now, it was working very sporadic and didn't seem very accurate. I'll add a new one to the list of this project boat. Thanks for the help guys!

Any suggestions on a replacement depth sounder manufacture? Maybe air and water temp.

I would try re-epoxying it to the hull first. It may work just fine, as that's what happened with mine. You can google for how to do it, but generally, just put a bunch of epoxy down and put the sensor in, rotating as you do so that you don't end up with any air bubbles between the transducer and the hull which is what causes sporadic or bad readings. With the amount of bumps hulls are subject to, not to mention trailering, it's not surprising that they bust loose after a while.

I agree. If you're getting sporadic readings its because its loose. This is a through hull depth sounder. Try to find the place it was mounted before. They are fast and great at reading depth. However, their positioning is critical to their operation. Needs to be in front of the prop and out of any white water under the hull.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll try epoxying it back on place. I cannot locate where it was mounted originally.

Tmosely, I'll take you up on the photo location you offered, if you have time to take it.

I appreciate the help on this.

Before you epoxy it just to see if it still works you can just clean the spot off where it goes with some degreaser and use command strips in place so in the event it doesn't work you don't have to deal with removing adhesive.
