Hey guys - my first post.

I'm looking at buying a 2006 SAN 220 from an auction. Things look good except for the engine bay has some rust-colored splatter on one of the walls next to the dip stick...and the dip stick is missing. There are a few good dings in the prop. Anyone know what the cause of the splatter might be? Stay away from this one?

I really have no idea what that is but I'd definitely take a chance on the boat if the price was right. Try correctcraftfan.com, lots of engine guys over there.

looks like the drain plug for the manifold is missing. if the water was left in there for an extended period, the water would be very rusty, when removing the plug, rusty water could spray out. almost looks like someone ran the boat with the plug out and flushed the rust out all over the inside of the compartment. would definitely want a dipstick to check oil, and a water test for an hour or so to make sure nothing is wrong with cooling system or a cracked block. check all fluids after test run when back on dry land to make sure they look the same as before the test run. could be a sign of poor winterizing practices.

I think I know which boat this is, and if it is the one I am thinking of, I am pretty sure this one was at least partially underwater during the Texas floods.

I would proceed with the idea that the engine may need extensive work or a rebuild. I'm going to guess that there is lots of water in the oil, and someone cranked the boat before draining the oil and replacing it (or doing anything else that should be done to an engine that's been underwater), causing the mixture to shoot out the dipstick hole and spray oil/water/rust everywhere. Otherwise the boat looks pretty good. Carpet is missing and there is some fiberglass/gelcoat work to be done, but for the right price this could be an OK project boat.

If you look closely in your pictures both the front drain plugs in the manifolds are missing. My guess is that the boat has been started after the drain plugs were removed causing wet and rusty mixture to be blown out. A typical symptom of having water left in the manifolds. Do you have any other pictures of the boat or an idea on hours? The PO had a new Jasper engine put in mine right before I bought it. By right before I mean I'm still in the 20 hour break in period. (ZR6 motor) cost about 4,300 with install.

My vote is that the rust is what was puked out of the exhaust manifold when the drain plug was removed but, I would sure a heck check the oil for signs of moisture. Pull the spark plugs and see what they look like or what hopefully does not drain out of the cylinder. If it was underwater it will have water sitting on top of some of the pistons but not all.

I should re-clarify. That's a remanufactured Jasper 6.0 Marine Engine. I've got the receipts for it. It might have been 6,300. I'm all the way across the world from everything right now. But I know it was under 7,000. It caught me by surprise because the Remanufactured Jasper engine in my truck ran me over 10K.

This boat not having a dipstick still confuses me. However, if you really wanted to take a look at the oil and you've got a V-8 in your truck, grab your truck dipstick just to see what the oil in this thing looks like.

Holy cow! Sorry to thread jack, but the OP seems to have moved on anyway. 10K for a reman Jasper!?!? What kind of engine are you talking about? I had a Ford dealership put a brand new 5.4 Triton in my last truck for like 6k.

Yeah, sadly! It was a 5.4 3v engine out of a 2006 F-150. My labor was also $100/hr. That was the cheapest reputable jasper mechanic I could find in my area.

Cam phaser issues I bet. Same here. Went out on one side and limped in to the dealer on 4 cylinders. Mine was an 04 F150. It had 150k on it, but ran great until the phasers went out. I guess I am one of the lucky ones to get that many miles out of it before they crapped out.

My issue wasn't cam phasers. I lost a rocker on the #4 cylinder. She took out everything under the valve cover when she let loose. Said it wasn't getting oil back there for some reason. Now the first jasper they put in got 5 miles on it before the phasers jumped the chain. Jasper ate the bullet on that one and I stalled another engine. She only has 116,000 miles on her when the original engine went. Took almost a year of back and forth for jasper to get it running like new again. It was always back In the shop. Ran great for 3 years. Now it sounds like I've got a ticking noise on the passenger side.
