Gt40 starting issue.... click...click... start.... please help...

So… Here is the END of the Story…

After taking my boat to the first shop for a full tune up and requesting that the slave solenoid be replaced and a few other items, and being told two different time two WRONG reasons that “Clicking” was happening, I took the boat to a different shop. Lee’s Summit has dealer named Summit Boats and Gear that had worked on my boat in the past, but since I was helping a buddy with a motor replacement, I took my boat to that shop (BIG mistake for us both).

First issue was incorrectly telling me to replace the battery to stop the Clicking.

Second issue was telling me to replace the 2g ground with a 6g ground.

Third issue was installing the impeller backwards.

Fourth issue was telling me that the “Clicking” after new battery and new Ground Ends on original 2G wire was the Key pad.

Fifth issue was belts had been twisted at some point in the process on impeller. (hate to think this, but I wonder if it because he had RE-
Work the issue and was upset with me questioning the service shop).

Sixth issue was Perfect Pass was not installed in correct locations.

Seventh issue is now the muffler has a small leak. I know they will not address this issue because they are unhappy with me taking the boat to Summit Boats and Gear.

The First shop had told me if I would bring my boat back for the third time (90 minutes each way), they would replace the Slave Solenoid for FREE, but they might have messed something up (In My Opinion) or (In My Opinion) caused a new issue in the process (In My Opinion). Also, they might have fixed or looked at the belt that they replaced two times for the twist.

When I told Summit Boats and Gear about the CLICK and what had been replaced, the first thing they told me was… HAS TO BE THAT Slave Solenoid… They got me in FAST… and found the issue and addressed them.

At first the original shop refused to pay for the service to replace the relay, then I asked if they would pay for the Found Issue and the owner got rather upset with me. Told me something like this but cannot recall wording…’I will just refund all your money but I never want to see again, you cannot use my ‘service or park’. Also, if you are at an event ‘wake the world’ that I sponsor, I will take my stuff and leave.’
I told him all I want is the cost of the service at Summit Boats and Gear that fixed the starting issue and fixed a few errors in what they serviced. That amount is less than HALF of what the total that I paid to them. He told me Fine, ended the phone call, and I am sure there will be strongly written letter with the check that I get in the mail.

Been dealing with this issue since end of last summer...

I took it into the shop and asked them to find and fix the issue... still have the issue.

I will try to relay all the details the best I can
    ...

Starting middle of last summer I started to get a "click" when tring to start. Then it would start.
    Sound comes from relay....
So I was going to replace it but before trying to do it...
    I replaced battery....
    Still clicking... then start
    Add a new ground.....
    Still clicking... then start...
It was now close to the end of the season, I planned on having a full tune up at the start of this year... so I would just have then replace it then.

    Jump through March 2016
    Take the boat in for...
Belts, plugs, rotor, cap, wires, impeller, belts... and perfect pass.

Shop told me your boat is ready to pick up...
I show up and the mechanic tellso me... "I only had your issue with your battery and you could use a new ground wire... but a standard 6g is ok"
"If you replace the battery and ground, you should be fine".

I ask 'if I get a battery from you, and I still get the click, will you replace the relay?' ... was told... "yes".

Got home..I saw the ground was 2g... so I when to a audio stop and get a ground post replacement. And cleaned the block mounting location.

Jump to 3 weeks later... pull boat off trailer no issue check for hose leeks... none.... drive 200 feet see the temp is 200... (impeller flipped)....

And... get towed to dock... and start start to click when cooled to less then 160 and going to ready go back to trailer...

Get it back to the shop... the will no longer fix the relay... because they claim the issue is the dash button.

They claim that they pulled everything and tested is all.. and relay checked out ok....

Get the boat back take two short rides... starter clicks ones again....

    Forward to now..

Wife at work thing... so I am going to take kids for a ride....

Click.... click...click....click....click (x8)... go get jump box click... click...click... (xfew times)...

Pull battery run to parts store have it checked.....
    Checks ok...
Put it back in... click... click.. click...START.... (thinking ' that mfer shop')

Let it run for 10 min... shut it off... restart... click click... start....

    So.....

Could it the issue be anything other than relay...

(New battery, new ground post, new starter last summer)

    Thanks!

If all your connections are good then I'd say replace the relay given the age of the GT40 being 15+ years old. You can get them from nautique parts not too expensive and I'd recommend installing it yourself and saving the $100 in labor a dealer would charge. I swapped mine out as part of an engine overhaul just as a preventive measure due to the age of my GT40 and its components.

I assume the relay that you are talking about is for the starter solenoid? If so, than the relay might be working just fine but the solenoid has crapped out and isn't moving the starter teeth to engage the flywheel. The starter wont spin up unless the solenoid is engaged, which is why you only hear the solenoid relay actuate. Pull the starter and have it tested.

You can also tap gently the starter with a wrench and it will usually free up the solenoid and get it to start, but it will happen again and again - more frequently each time.

The click is from under the computer. Old school ford relay.

Mine ex343 was doing something similar. Replaced the starter, which also had a new starter solenoid, and that solved the problem.

I agree and think you should pull the starter and have it checked. Sounds like a solenoid going out

Gt40 has two... one on the starter... one relay, that that ford uses years remote... and has been know to fail... would be nice if it was easy to acces...

If it were me personally (if you haven't already) I would start with the one on the starter. Then go from there.

Dang, I was about to post a new thread, about the EXACT SAME THING. 2001 GT40. Keypad start. Push the start button repeatedly, click click click click, and finally it cranks. I did have the battery cable off the starter to diagnose what ended up being a ****ty battery terminal, so I figured maybe I didn't get the cable super tight. But is sounds like it's either the booster relay or the starter solenoid.

I tried to. .. add a 2nd ground... and that did not seam to work... guess... I could re clean the block grounding point... I did replace the ground post with a stinger car audio clamp... because mine was junk but that was after running a 2nd ground.

As for sn... I would like to know if you have the issue come back... totally intermittent at start...

I have a 2002 San and Mine did the clicking all last summer. Ended up just being the starter solenoid right here.

I get ONE CLICK per Pressing of Start...
Thinking.... I might go with Car Audio Store and Get a 0/1 4 foot wire and replacing that...

Mine does something a little similar, putting in a new starter solenoid shortly at mechanics recommendation. Pushing start button, click. Push again, click, until it starts... A bit stressful in middle of the lake with a boat full of people. I'Ll let you know how it turns out after the work is done.
