Is yours doing multiple clucking or just one? Per press/start?

Electric all on, no starter at all. Kind of like when you try to start in gear.

I have experienced this issue on 2 different occasions on my 98 SS with GT40. 1st time it was starter solenoid (same as rossrips7)and 2nd time about a year later it was ignition switch.

Gmtrainer that reminds me... I had a key switch go bad and made the starter act weird at times and click like a bad solenoid on my 89 sport I remember changing out the key switch by recommendation from a friend and it never happened again.

Did you have a key or button pad?

Mine had a key, but even the push buttons have connections inside. I wasn't to sure about it at the time. But it's worth a look.

I have a keypad and prior to replacing the solenoid it would click once each time you hit start and finally start after a couple clicks. It's back to new now after the replacement

                      Ok, all..... thanks!!...

Here is where I am at....

I am going to take Friday off... (kids... out of town this weekend)

I have ordered the starter relay... should be here Friday.

I will start by getting a new 1/0 ground.

                      Trun on boat...
Kind hope.. the start won't work...

If it does not jump the starter by running a wire from hot wire at starter... if starts each time hope it is just the relay under the computer.

??? Can I check the wire go I ng to the relay..?? With volt meter? Test light? ... alone? ..

If it will not start with the wire from the hot the small wire on starter... I will replace ground.. aND clean the block aND use to electric grease..

If that does not work... I will pull the key pad.. and send it in the white lake to test...

it could also be a bad power cable running to the starter/solenoid, the external solenoid should have 4 terminals (2 small for signal, input, and output) you would need to verify voltage at both the input and output terminals while you are trying to start the boat - depending on space it might be a two man job. I think the started is grounded to the block (even on boats) so as long as you have a good ground at your keypad and battery it shouldn't be an issue.

Mine does a single click per button push, eventually started every time last summer, but getting new solenoid put in soon. Will try to remember to update you all on result.

If the solenoid doesn't fix it id be surprised. It looks like a cheaply made part and from the sounds of it we have all had one fail on us!

I guess that it's like in any system, the weakest component leads to failure. $25 part can leave an expensive boat dead in water...

BTW, you do not need to order this part from a marine place. It is the same ole starter relay that Ford has used in countless cars and therefore available from any decent auto parts store:

                                http://www.napaonline.com/napa/en/p/...4SB_0145398101

My closest store is NAPA for example. I just mention this because it sure sucks waiting a week for a part when you can just drive 10 minutes to your local auto parts store and fix the boat.
