There is a small amount of oil that has collected around the crimp ring of my oil filter. I don't know if this is normal and acceptable of if something needs to be done. This oil change has 7 hours on it and I know there was no oil on the oil filter at the 5 hour mark. The O-ring from the previous filter did not come off on the filter mounting plate as it was completely intact on the filter when I removed it. However that filter (K&N) did leak a couple quarts of oil over about 30 hours. I replaced that filter with a Motorcraft FL-1A and for 5 hours there was no oil accumulating in the groove, but now at 7 hours there is a very small amount of oil. Thoughts? Should I be concerned?

I assume that the oil is accumulating by leaking past the rubber O-ring on the filter, but I'm not sure. Has anyone else seen this occur before and if so any thoughts on how to stop it?2007 Malibu Wakesetter 23 LSV, 1995 Cobalt 200

Although not ideal I see a little oil like that on mine at times, it seems worse during the colder air temps. Always double check the surface for the old gasket when changing filters and oil the rubber gasket on the new filter before installing.
Where was the old K&N leaking from, a couple quarts is a significant leak.

Mine does this too and I have a K&N filter on it. Mine started right after a new filter was put on. The groove gets about half full each time I go out and I've just been wiping it away so that it won't end up spilling over and running down the filter. Next change I'll double check the surface and if it still happens I might try a different brand of oil filter. As the boat is 'new to me' this is the first oil change I've done so I don't know if it's been an ongoing thing or just from the recent oil change.

Quinner,
I assume it was leaking from the O-ring seal on the K&N oil filter. I couldn't find any hoses leaking. Yes it was a significant amount of oil that leaked and shame on me for not being more on top of it. I don't really know how long the oil had be leaking before I noticed, but I assume it had been a little while because it wasn't a fast leak. I really noticed it when I went to winterize the boat this past November.
The weird part is that the current filter didn't get any oil in the groove for 5 engine hours and then by the 7 engine hour mark a little oil has accumulated. I'm hyper vigilant about checking it now.2007 Malibu Wakesetter 23 LSV, 1995 Cobalt 200

I have never had to change a filter on a remote oil. Ill check mine when I get home. I haven't changed the oil yet since I bought the boat but I was looking at it the other day and didnt notice any oil in that grove. When installing my oil filters I always A. check to make sure the old o-ring came off and B. take a bit of oil and lube up the o-ring surface before hand tightening the filter. Your not getting any oil leaking from the inlet/outlet to the remote filter location are you?

I did check my remote oil filter quickly last night and did notice a very little bit of oil in my lip - the equivalent of a few drops. I wonder if its just a little bit that seeps past the o-ring during high oil pressure. Possibly done when the engine is cold and running higher RPM's and the oil pressure is greater than at normal operating temperatures.
