    Gelcoat repair

Thought I would share my experience with everyone about gel coat repair. I recently had some VERY bad luck with my boat. Left my new to me G23 on one of my best friends and neighbors mooring ball on our lake. I was going to pick up my new trailer for the boat the next day. I had originally been given a 2016 trailer (I have a 2013 G23). The dealer told me a 2016 would fit and after the fact I found that to not be true. That's a whole other story that I'm still upset about. However, that night it was on the mooring, the line decided to break and allowed my boat to go floating off into the neighbors jet ski lift. We have left our boats on that mooring countless times but I drew the short straw this time I guess.

I was was terribly nervous about doing this repair, but with the bill being over $1000 to repair, I figured I couldn't screw it up very much more than it was and it was worth $60 to try and do myself. I have never ever done any sort of gelcoat repair before. I did lots of research online and watched a lot of diy videos and I set out and did it over this past weekend. I followed Grant's write up on wake world and adapted to my situation of where the damage was(corner and bottom of hull)

To anyone out there who is nervous about doing this now or in the future, don't be. If you do none of your own maintenance and shiver at the thought of holding any kind of tools in your hands then yeah maybe don't do this, but if you like getting your hands dirty and like the satisfaction of diy, this is totally doable.

Did you need to use any filler on the peice missing in the above picture? Or did you use just the spectrum gel coat on it? I have one the same size on the top side bow of my boat and wasn't sure if I need filler, it is about the same size as the one in the above picture.

Were you able to match a hull color, it is hard to tell from pix. Otherwise looks great!

Those "kits" are factory colors, you may have to hit the hull with rubbing compound if it's oxidized to match the fresh repair.

Shockthis the two other containers were for another project later. It was hardener and an empty spray bottle. The small can was the Nautique Masters blue paint(that went with the hardener) that I was using to paint the tower cross braces to match my accent color. I just accidentally left them in the picture.

The color matched absolutely perfect. Absolutely cannot tell there was ever a repair there. I used no filler for this repair. It was on the hairy edge of needing it, but wasnt quite deep enough, which made me very happy!

Haha just had the same sort of chip on the bottom corner of my hull. I always approach things as I'm just a few YouTube videos always from doing it myself.

After having completed it, no reason to pay to have this done. Just be patient and take your time. Specially with nautique parts.com selling color match gel coat patch.

                  Nice work!

Looks awesome! I have the same repair to do too. I bought the kits last year (I needed two colors too) and have not got around to it yet because I was a bit concerned of the result...but I'm in now! Thanks!
