    Break in period

For those of you that have already taken delivery of your '16 model boats....what is the break in period and what are the details of that time frame??

There are instructions in the owner's manual in more detail.

But let the engine warm up, run it at varying speeds and periodically run her up to max RPM (somewhere around 5400) for up to a minute and then back to steady driving at varying speeds. Do this for the first 5 hours of operation.

Given that there are varying recommendations even from engine manufacturers on what is 'right', I think nobody knows for sure what is the best break in procedure. But that is my humble opinion. The only constant is varying RPM's.

Yeah, what's strange is (at least in my case) (2015 230) was they said warm it up, run high RPM's for a minute and then cruise at 2700-3000 for 20 or 30 minutes and repeat. That seemed counterintuitive to me, but what do I know? I just followed the instructions.

I've always broken my boats in by the book, but in reality, the rings are settled after the initial water test at the factory.

Yeah that's what I've always assumed. I am just worried that with all this new tech, they'll know if you didn't break it in "by the book". And I would love to very much so keep my 5 year warranty in tact!!!

What about the ballast. I thought I read where somebody stated that you aren't supposed to fill the ballast for that 5 hour break in period too? Any truth to that? That doesn't make much sense to me, other than if you wakeboard with full ballast it would have the RPM's too high for longer than the one minute mark.

I did the first 10 hours just playing around and surfing. Just dropped it off for the 10 hour service, now I plan to full ballast wakeboarding and everything else with no hesitation .

Were you told not to fill the ballast for the break in period?

Dealer told me to fill the ballast and go. They said the most important thing was to make sure to vary the RPMs often during the first 5-10 hours, trying not to exceed 5000rpms but to try and do some WOT pulls and run it (at just under 5k) for a little bit, then drop back down, then back up a little, and so on. This just helps to seat the piston rings. They said to go ahead tho with the ballast! Said that they will be the ones servicing it and that they'd have no problem with that procedure

I don't think you can hurt a PCM. At least without really trying hard to.
