ZR409 Misfiring. Changed plugs, wires, coil pack

    Hey guys,

Just looking to see if anyone has had this issue before. I am getting a misfire on cylinder #8. Engine is a 2010 ZR-409 in a 230. Usually the boat runs perfect for cruising around the lake, idling, etc. As soon as we add some people, ballast, and start wakeboarding or surfing, we will get a misfire and most of the time the boat will come off plane but not die completely. If I shut it down and fire it back up, i can usually get it back home with little issue, just a few stumbles.

We hooked our diacom system to it and read no issues on any cylinder except #8 and it came back with around 900 misfires every time we felt it happen.

We do have a pretty serious stereo. 4 amps, tower speakers, sub, EQ, 0 gauge wiring run through the boat, 10 Farad capacitor, brand new batteries etc. The music is always cranked so I don't know if there is any connection with a power draw. Volts always stay 13.9 and up. My next step is to run the boat with the stereo completely off and see if it misfires, just havent gotten there yet this week,

The other issue I found was last night. Went out surfing and had no issues for about 1/2 hour (which is about normal before a misfire). Had the music up, turned the nav lights on because it was getting dark and within 30 seconds, had a misfire. Not sure if it was a coincidence because we were just about coming up on the time it takes to misfire while riding.

Changed all plugs, wires, and cyl 8 coil pack.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Try switching the #8 injector with #6 if the miss follows the injector replace it.

      Will do. Thanks.

I feel like if it was an injector it would either work 100% or wouldnt at all. I'm not a mechanic so I could be completely off here.

You should have started by just switching the parts with a known good cyl . That would have saved you the cost of all your replacement parts and isolated the exact cause of the miss.Did you do a compression check?

08 236 zr6. Had a similar issue this past weekend , idling and running around empty boat was fine. Loaded up with ballast it would cut out , loose some speed but not die completely. This was after 20 minutes of surfing. So motor was loaded.
boat had 91 octane in it when this happened, put in 100 liters of fresh 94 octane and problem went away.

so I suspected bad fuel for what was being asked if the motor. Cylinder stress was up so it wanted more octane to keep the knock sensor happy.

            have you tried fresh fuel?

Got it. It was dirt in the pre filter. Swapped both fuel filters and the pre filter and its been running perfect ever since.
