2001 SAN temperature running around 180... Hot?

So is posted a few times already about the boat. Took it out Thursday night with me dad and brother. Boarded for 1hr no ballast and the boat ran around 165 170. Took it out today it's 101 out, had 8 people on the boat and full ballasts. Ran the boat around 20-30 mph for 3 hours. Stayed around 170-180 after we stopped cooled right back down to 160. Just wondering if the boat may still have a blockage somewhere or is that temperature ok for the boat? Just put a new 160 thermostat in and the lake temperature was 77 if that matters. Thanks for any advice everyone !

No expert here, but my GT-40 temp. gauge will get on the hot side ~180 after I've been running for a while and come to a stop, especially if I shut the engine off. It should come back to normal 160, when idling. If you notice the temperature staying high while at idle for a prolonged period of time I would check it out. Sounds to me likes it's okay though. Just my $.02.

Thanks glassy, yeah as soon as I'm idling it drops back down to 155-160 in a couple of minutes. Thanks for the heads up!

170-180 with the info you provided sounds normal. I would question anything above 180 quickly!!

Sweet. Thanks guys. I was getting a little worried, less so when it would drop right back down, but still only have taken this boat out twice so far still learning how it behaves. Definitly have to learn to get use to driving a weighted down V-drive. I learned how to drive a pull skiers behind my uncles little mastercraft direct drive boat.

In my previous 1998 Air with GT-40, I would notice it doing something similar to this when I needed to change the water pump impeller. If it has been a while since this has been changed may want to do it as a preventative measure...but if its been serviced in the last year or so you should be OK. Just a thought....

The impeller was changed a week ago, thinking I may change the water pump in the near future.

Water temp only 77 degrees? You're running too hot if you ask me. I have a GT-40 and run in 72 degree water and never exceed 160. A 5 degree water temp difference isn't going to change the engine temp over 20 degrees. Have you checked your sea strainer? Ever unscrew it to clean out the debris? Sometimes the housing doesn't get threaded back properly and you'll get a small air leak.

Did you buy a PCM branded t-stat or one from AutoZone?

I cleaned out everything and back-flushed the lines. The strainer seems to be seated correctly. The o-ring is there and I believe it is tight enough not to allow air in. I got the thermostat from nautiqueparts so I am assuming it is the right one. I am wondering if my water pump might be on its way out, or the belt may be slipping? based on other comments some peoples GT-40 may be running warmer then others? Should I try a 143 thermostat? Maybe that will keep the temps around 160?

They will heat soak after shutting down. There is no cool water coming in so you will see a rise in the temperature after shutting down and starting up. As long as it comes back down, everything is functioning as advertised.

No. You want the 160 degree version for the FI engine. The 143 degree model is for the carb'ed motors.

Nope. Assuming everything is operating properly in your cooling path the engine should run at 160 regardless of load or running time under load.
