    Lost Prop

I have a 2000 Air Nautique that my son was using this past weekend. Cruising at about 20 mph popped it in neutral and then back into forward when he heard a loud thump so he pulled it back into neutral and then tried forward and engine just revved. Turns out there was no prop. We've not have nay work done on the prop so not sure how this could happen? Nautique dealer says that the cotter pin can get sheered off in a hard reverse and when you put it in neutral there goes the prop. Needless to say the prop is in the middle of the lake and we're out $400+ Any feedback on this. The lost prop did not use a nylock nut, but we will be using one now.

Here is a link to the instructions to properly install a prop. I doubt that most dealers do this but according to the experts once you lap the prop on it will stay on even without a nut or cotter pin because it is a tapered shaft. I have done this lately to both my boats. You also only need to torque it to 35ft lbs.
