GT40 Surging and Low Top End

I have a question regarding some performance of my '95 Super Sport with the GT40. At times is starts and runs perfect, but the speed tops out at 35 mph and it almost seems to be missing a little bit. It has a 644 prop but that shouldn't affect the top end much... Another time after starting it, it would surge really bad when I engaged the throttle. If I shut it down and started this would often clear that issue. Any ideas on what would cause this? Could it be the Oil Pressure Switch, HPFP, Fuel Filter...... Thanks much!

GT40 surging can be caused by a number of things, the first step is to grab a fuel pressure gauge and see if you still have good fuel pressure when its acting up. some of the popular causes are what you mentioned and its also pretty common for the older years of the GT40 to develop a crack inside the FCC in the line that is after the HP pump. I've also heard of cracked spark plugs causing this issue. for me, mine was caused by a failing 60A breaker that is cutting power to the fuel pumps.

Thanks for replying. I will check all the common connections and the connections to the batteries. Can I just buy a standard automotive fuel pressure gauge?
