Just upgraded from a 2014 Nautique 230 to a 2015 G21. Overall I love the boat but I noticed a high pitched sound from the engine that is kind of annoying. The dealer says this sound is normal for the 409 (my last boat had the ex343). For those of you with a zr409 engine, do you have a high pitched whine? Anyone have thoughts on how to reduce/remove the sound? I tried to attach an audio file to show what I'm talking about, the site doesn't seem to support uploading that file type (mp4a)

Right, it's not supercharged and this engine has been used by nautique for some time in 230's and 210's as well not just the g boats (in fact it p's a smaller engine for a g boat). Any other thoughts? The dealer heard the sound recording I took and said that's just what the 6.0 engine sounds like. So maybe it's normal but if so I'm a little surprised. I usually have tunes playing so I suppose it's not a big deal but I'd be interested in getting rid of it if I could.

Maybe it's a belt or a bearing going bad.... Alternator bearing, water pump bearing.... Those are only things I can think of but the nautique dealer would know more if that's normal then perhaps there's nothing to worry about. Vacuum leak in your intake manifold to could cause a noise like that.

We have a 14' Nautique 210 that was doing the same thing. We almost didn't buy it because after about 10 minutes of riding it gave us a headache. Our dealer didn't even know this until they got off their lazy arses and called around. There is what they call a "whistle plate" that you need to get them to install. After installation there is absolutely no sign of the noise. Tell them to call around until they find another dealer that has heard of it

If you do a search on here for "engine whistle" you will find several threads on it. My 216V with the 343 did it. It was repaired under warranty. They add a PCM supplied gasket to some intake and problem solved.

All, there are some older threads on here discussing what it is...the whine...and what fixed it. I had a 2010 226 with the 343...Whined really bad at different throttle positions. So bad it was irritating. Fix was dealer added a spacer pad under the throttle body....per PCM.......sound was COMPLETELY gone next time I took it out. I've got a G21 with the 409 and hear a little whine at certain throttle positions...but not as bad as my 226.

Thanks for the feedback and replies. I hadn't checked this thread for awhile so hadn't seen some of the more recent suggestions until now. In my case, it turns out the whine is the transmission/drive train rather than the engine. The service tech came out and realized there was an issue because the drive shaft was too hard to turn by hand. Upon further examination, realized the strut had a slight bend in it. They replaced the strut and the shaft turns freely now. I've not run the boat yet since they fixed it but they say the sound is no more as expected. Thanks to everyone for the feedback/ideas. BTW, not sure how the strut was bent. I can only assume the previous owner hit something and replaced just the prop, not realizing the strut was bent as well. It is pretty subtle bend.
