Looking seriously at purchasing a 1997 Ski Nautique 196 with PCM GT40 engine. Now informed that some GT40 parts "are becoming hard to get" and that the ECM (computer) is "unavailable." Advice, input requested and appreciated. Am reluctant to purchase this boat if GT40 parts availability is an issue.

I have a gt40 and I havn't heard that there were issues. Between Nautique Parts and Skidim you can get most parts. Nautique Parts has the ECM. A lot of the parts are the same as what was used on cars and can be sourced at auto parts stores.
Worst case scenario is that if the parts were no longer available and replacements couldnt be found, you could always convert the engine to carved but I think we are still a long way away from that.

Agreed, I wouldn't be cncerned about parts. I did a complete rebuild on my GT40 this year and was worried about parts like sensors and electrical components... Turned out everything can be sourced between the marine websites listed above and the auto industry. The only think I can think that I would still possibly have trouble finding would be the cam shaft for the GT40 but even that can be custom made through an auto engine shop I'm sure. If it turns out you need help finding anything just post and someone will point you in right direction for the part you need.

You won't have to worry about anything for the motor. Everything will be available forever as it crosses to the auto industry. There is nothing fancy about these engines.
Nautique specific items are what you have to be concerned about. Decals, keypads, vents, etc.

Very grateful for these responses!!!! I really like the Ski Nautique I am looking at with the GT40 but didn't want to invest if stranded without parts when needed.
You've really helped me, and I am grateful.

The ECU thing is for the Pro Boss Pro-Tec EFI (i.e. not the GT-40 with the Ford EEC-IV engine management), the Pro Tec module is the one you can't source. the GT-40 is pretty much a Ford Bronco / Mustang combination so if you can still get parts for them you're fine. Coming new to the GT40 from a Mercruiser 350 Mag Ski there have been no problems although 351w Ford parts are a bit harder to find this side of the pond than 350 Chevy for some reason.
