    Transmission possible failure

I launched my boat at the lake and noticed that I couldn't shift into any gears. It stays in netural all the time. I checked linkage and it was good. I checked if I can move gear arm on transmission and it moved but I couldn't engage a gear. So I towed it to my dealer and after inspecting he thinks that oil pump failed and also he saw metal shavings. Can you guys give me an advice what should I do? New Trans is 3.8k with labor.

Get if fixed and pay the guy or do the replacement yourself. You could see if your shop can offer a rebuilt trans, could save quite a bit over new and IMO are just as reliable. Either scenario make sure to also replace the trans cooler and damper plate.

I was going to make the same suggestion Quinner made, about a rebuilt transmission. Could save you a bunch of money.

He thinks the oil pump failed or he knows it failed? To get to the magnet that pick up any metal shavings you have to split the transmission case itself. If they opened it then the mechanic would have had to of seen the oil pump and known with certainty if it failed. Sounds like maybe he was able find some metal shavings that were suspended in the oil by sucking up some oil from the dip stick hole or disconnecting a cooler line but I ask only because if it hasn't been removed from the boat and opened up then that's something you could do to save a lot of money if you are concerned about paying big bucks.

If if is in fact the oil pump then I believe you can purchase the two pump gears (shown in picture below) and replace them saving you the expense of a total tranny replacement. There should be a couple plugs in the tranny case that you or your mechanic can hook up a pressure guage too and verify wether or not your tranny oil pump is making pressure or not. Your dealership should of at least done that before telling you your oil pump is shot and you need an entire new tranny at $3,800!!! If they have not tested the oil pressure or opened it up and are telling you that you need to spend $3,800 then that sounds fishy to me...

zero oil pressure could also be a jammed regulator valve according to the PCM service manual.

Mine looks like that, they checked pump and said it not pumping oil.
Transmission alone is 2.8 k from pcm, the rest are labor and taxes.

Before it happened boat acted like it had a misfire on cylinders or choking caused by bad wires or rotor. No warning lights came on.

You can't purchase just the pump gear from your dealership or PCM directly instead of buying the entire transmission? If you have no option but to go complete replacement then it looks like Skidim.com has them for $1700 and they are heavy duty upgrade over the 40I model and plug n play with the Ford or Chevy whatever motor you got I believe.... See pic.... I THINK these are complete transmissions it would seem so looking at the picture...

Thanx, I called them and it's a kit so I would have to rebuild. But at the end it is stronger transmission he said.
Unfortunately my dealer doesn'the do a rebuilt and it would add up labor too if he did.

Bummer! I was hoping that was the entire tranny but thought perhaps $1770 was too good to be true... There was a scrapped tranny for parts in the classifieds a few months ago I think for $600.... It's not even my problem but I feel bad that a little cracked oil pump gear has to cost you $2,800 in an entirely new transmission to fix the issue.
